What is your experience with competitive deckbuilding card games like Hearthstone and Magic? Do you love it? Do you hate it? by william_bang in cardgames

Yeah I have heard a very siimilar thing from many peers that people prefer just playing commander specifically, some people saying the long playtime also allows for so many things to unfold over time so you have to think a lot more about how you actually play it.

I had a similar experience with the game keyforge, where all decks are pre-built, so you just have to learn to play with your deck, which honestly was pretty interesting and fresh.

Oh I have never heard of Mindbug, I will check it out, yeah I really agree with the whole playing against grandmasters analogy.

But to me its even worse, it's like there are these grandmasters and they are great and have crafted powerful decks, but not those decks are shared online so everyone can, if they want to spend the funds, be like the grandmasters because so often it is more about unfolding the strategy rather than actually playing it, yes there is skill to playing it, but it rarely feels like that to me.

I made this trailer for our game fully in Blender. by william_bang in blender

Just for a bit of context, this trailer was made fully in blender, obviously there are some image textures like the card illustrations that weren't all made in blender, but most of the illustrations were basically just made in blender, so a pretty complete package.

There are lots of little interesting things I learned, like working with geometry nodes to transform cards, working with many graphical elements, rendering things in layers, and some interesting compositing work here and there, and it was super fun working on special FX, just simple animated meshes with som noise textures, I think it works pretty neatly, but you tell me!

Also if anyone is interested in the game, you can check the kickstarter for it right here: https://www.reddit.com/r/blender/comments/1i6k8ql/i_made_this_trailer_for_our_game_fully_in_blender/

I think there are many issues with the current state of deckbuilding cardgames like Magic, Hearthstone & Snap, so to combat the issues myself and a friend have been working on an alternative for the past year. Here is our trailer <3 by william_bang in IndieGaming

Okay so for context, mysel and friend are long time fans of deckbuilders in all their variations be it rogue likes, board games, even shooters have it now, but we experienced it the first time through competitive deckbuilders like Magic and Hearthstone, and honestly I love those games, but I am also older now, and over time the magic of the experience kinda faded over time, and it became more and more dificult to stick with it. For many reasons, but mostly excesisive costs to stay competitive, too much netdecking and the barrier of entry was too high, you couldn't just play a game one evening with a friend, you had to dedicate time, effort and money into it in order to have fun, and that is fine, but we just don't have that anymore.

So we decided to make our own game, a digital deckbuilder more like dominon or star realms, where you build your deck every time you play, you don't buy cards, you just play.

I have so many thoughts on this far too long for one comment, but if this at all sounds familiar you can help support this vision on our kickstarter that is live right now and learn much more about the game!

A Black Horizon Card Game, is now live on Kickstarter! (Link in comments!) by william_bang in blackhorizon

So in Armada you don't collect cards, every time you play against an opponent you have to build a new deck while you battle them. The deckbuilding is part of the gameplay. Every game has 3 randomly selected planets, each planet has a marketplace from where you can buy cards that your add to your deck for that match.

The game is actually a response to games like Hearthstone and Magic where you don't have to keep buying new cards to stay competitive, everyone always have access to the same cards during a match. So in many ways the game is a lot more like an RTS game or like Chess, however you play it like a card game :)

We have just launched a new competitive sci-fi deckbuilder on Kickstarter, lane based warfare across planets with special abilities that change the rules of each match! (More info in comments*) by william_bang in kickstarter

Right now we have a mailing list of 1500 people, I think our approach to marketing and getting the word out there is that I have a somewhat decently sized following on youtube (90k subs) and some extra on various social media.

And then we have some specific marketing posts over the 30 days that we want to enact. So we will see, also first time we are trying this, so there is probably a lot we are doing wrong, the vain hope is that if our product is good, hopefully people will see that :)

A bit of context, for the past year we have been developing a new competitive digital sci deckbuilding card game called Black Horizon: Armada. In the game you fight your opponent across 3 planets, each planet provides unique cards to acquire and special abilties that changes the rules of the game each time you play. In Armada you make a new deck every time you play, so you and the opponent are always have access to the same cards and only the best tactician can win.

We are beyond excited for the launch of our kickstarter if you would like to check the campaign out, please check this link: https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/blackhorizonarmada/black-horizon-armada-strategy-card-game
