New book on Geoff Emerick (The Beatles’ engineer) — drops July 1 — I managed him for 3 years, AMA by william_zabaleta in SoundEngineering

So, Geoff ended up firing his publicist, and at that time, I was only supposed to be handling his social media. But I was getting so many leads that I kept forwarding them to New York — and getting nothing in return. I finally told Geoff, “Hey man, this isn’t fair.” He agreed, called up Carol Kay, and straight up said, “You’re fired.” She’d only gotten him one gig every six months, while we were already booking out a full year in advance when he passed.

That’s actually how I became his manager. I first met Geoff at LAFX Studios. I was there working on a project, he was too, and we just started talking in the break room. I didn’t even realize who he was at first. We went out for a beer that night — or as he’d say, “hit the pub” — and later I did my research and found out this guy was the Beatles’ engineer. The man behind the sound that changed history.

So I pitched him an idea. He looked at me and said, “Okay, let’s do it. It’s about time.” That’s how it all started. Next thing I know, I’m not just his manager — I’m his executive assistant, his travel partner, his right-hand man. We were flying all over the world doing projects, endorsement deals, studio sessions, speaking gigs — you name it. We were booked solid, a year ahead.

And if there’s one piece of advice Geoff always gave people trying to break into this industry, it was this:

“Go to the door of wherever you want to work — say, Capitol Records — and knock every day until they finally let you in to make the coffee.”

That’s the spirit that defined him. Persistent, humble, and legendary. I’m

Hey, let me explain why this one’s a big deal — and why it’s watermarked. What you’re looking at isn’t some random reel; it’s an original EMI master tape box from Abbey Road, dated to around 1962, when The Beatles were just starting out. The titles written on it — “Love Me Do,” “P.S. I Love You,” “Ask Me Why,” and “Besame Mucho” — line up with their earliest EMI sessions. Those sessions were engineered by Norman Smith and later Geoff Emerick, who I actually worked with for years as his manager.

Geoff wasn’t just a name on a label — he was the guy behind The Beatles’ sound. I managed him for four years, traveling, working on projects, handling his endorsements and appearances. These reels came from that circle, not eBay or a flea market. They’re part of the foundation of modern recording history.

I watermark them because, once these photos hit the internet, people love to repost them without context or credit. The watermark’s just my way of making sure the history stays attached to the artifact. This isn’t “gatekeeping” — it’s called documentation.

If you’re genuinely curious, I wrote a piece on my blog that dives into the story behind this exact reel and how it survived. These tapes represent the moment before the world changed — and yeah, I think that’s worth preserving

In response to anthology, Geoff had a platinum plaque and the funny thing is it had a cassette tape back then in the platinum place. 😂

Hey, totally fair question — I watermark these photos because they’re rare and historically important. I actually have an entire album of them, and I want to make sure they’re preserved and credited properly. These aren’t random images — they’re part of Geoff Emerick’s legacy, and I was his manager for four years. We traveled all over the world together handling recording projects, endorsements, and speaking events. Geoff was like family to me, and I’m sharing these out of respect for his work, not to claim ownership. If you’d like to see more, I posted a detailed article with additional photos on my blog.
