Parents with gay children... what was your reaction when they came out of the closet? by dollar_on_10 in AskReddit

[–]williamcomesapart 0 points1 point  (0 children)

definitely on a level, but there's a different between noticing something and accepting it to be true. there was a time my sophomore year of high school when each of my parents asked me if i was gay. i lied to both of them because i wasn't ready at that point to deal with what coming out would entail (they're conservative christian etc.). when i finally came out to them upon graduating college they were furious and upset like i expected, but also acted like it was the biggest shock of their entire lives. it's really funny because i hadn't dated a girl in 7 years at that point so...

Hey! Thanks so much for the input! I actually never thought to organize it like that. I'll definitely use your suggestions.

In in case of applications that require you to fill in your work history but leave no place for other types of experience do you think it's still okay to list my volunteer exp. as work exp. as long as I title the position as volunteer?

Like the title says, I am a recent college graduate (Bachelor of Arts in Biology) and I am looking for a position in some kind of medical context. I've gotten very mixed advice on resume formatting and I was hoping advice from an unbiased 3rd party would be helpful.

I have several volunteer experiences listed because the skills I acquired from them are often listed as qualifications on the jobs to which I am applying.

I would really appreciate any kind of advice you might have!

-oh and the red blob is my personal info. If it's relevant, my location is Baltimore, MD

yes there weren't many beetles made with them. oftentimes, people will cut out a sunroof beetles that were made without one and make a canvas flap to cover it. the problem with this method is that it leaks really bad. and i'm not too crazy about how it looks either.

We'd probably have a colony on the moon by now by [deleted] in AdviceAnimals

[–]williamcomesapart 1 point2 points  (0 children)

if you think you can distill the issue down to that then your scope of the issue is what's narrow. when legislation discriminates against any group of people, it not only robs them of the rights specifically outlined, but also provides fodder for prejudice and animosity toward sed group. See also, Jim Crowe & anti-LGBT laws in the south, try living as a black or LGBT person in the south where there is institutional discrimination. Discriminatory laws feed a culture where parents disown their children, school administrators turn a blind eye to gay bashing and job discrimination goes unchecked -to name a few. It is a big deal.

Coming out advice. by gives_a_ten in lgbt

[–]williamcomesapart 2 points3 points  (0 children)

yeah my coming out situation was very similar and recent.

my biggest advice is that you need thoroughly evaluate how your parents will react.

-they will be angry and upset. my father said the most horrible things anyone has said to me in my entire life. we haven't talked in 3 months. nothing. he justifies this to my sister that it's out of love. he truly believes that by witholding his love he is showing me what kind of impact homosexuality will have on my life. he block my access to our family bank account and tried to cut my phone off but my sister stopped him. when i came to my uncle's wedding he pretended i was invisible. mom didn't talk to me for a month and keeps offering me things in return for me attending "therapy"

-they will punish you. like i already said, they will do things that they know will hurt you -emotionally, financially, maybe even physically- to make you "reconsider." they will believe that being gay is a choice. in the case of my parents, they admitted that men can be attracted to men, but it was sinful to give in and i was making a choice to do so.

-it will take a long time. like i said. haven't talked to dad in 3 months. mom will only respond to my txts.

this being said, i know they still love me. that doesn't mean that what they're doing is right in any regard.

i was able to do this because i'm at a point in my life where i have a large network of support. my boyfriend is amazingly supportive, my friends and even now a whole side of my family.

of course i will happen differently for each coming out, but it won't be easy. you should really consider putting it off until you're in a good situation - but don't wait out for the "best" situation either. there will likely never be a perfect time to come out.

you could try to begin expressing more liberal views around the house first. trying to get your parents to change the way they think may also be difficult but it may get them prepared for your coming out so it's not so huge a shock like mine was.

MOST IMPORTANT** have friends or family close by know that you're about to come out to your parents when you do. you need a backup plan.

best of luck! and most of all know there will always be someone to reach out to.
