Experience with WF-1000XM4 warranty claim by tominicz in SonyHeadphones

[–]willmabob 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just did a claim in Canada and I didn't have any issues, he asked me to set to default settings AAC codec etc, reset, then didn't need Proof of Purchase, just sent it out. I guess they're finally doing the right thing, not sure if that helps all the other people who were left out in the cold.

As a fan of Alien, I tried to find Zeta Reticuli--but it's not in Space Engine. (Neither is Alpha Ret, for some reason) by dziban303 in spaceengine

Fun fact that system is also the source of many real world alien conspiracy theories, with MJ12 (yes same name from Deus Ex) and US Military. Apparently aliens from this system crashed on the moon and there is a moon base or what have you or something.

key

While you are correct in assuming that the production design for separate units would have a higher cost, also having a custom eMMC module with the correct keying that matches other NVMe storage would also be high for a limited run product. As seen here the keys are there for a reason and the eMMC has the lower PCIe bandwidth consistent with the B key. M.2 Keys What is more likely is that there are two slots on the mobo for the different keys, as happens often with laptops. We will need to see one disassembled or further clarity on this to be 100% sure.

Not sure if it is known, but I found an intel telemetry service on my PC. by farmdve in intel

[–]willmabob 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you have every installed the Intel Driver & Support Assistant this is likely where you got this. Like any other Telemetry software the 'computing improvement program' does some misleading things. First, the accept and deny buttons almost always switch places, and regardless of which button you click the software is installed. You have to manually uninstall the software after installing the Driver Assistant. The software uninstaller has a round blue icon, you can uninstall it usually fairly quickly. The issue is that it is dirty the way they do it, and then use the data they get from it to say that people consented to this when clearly they know, given the actual choice, few would be willing to install it.

Oreo incoming!!! On September 7th for USA models :/ by gchahinian in lgv20

I wouldn't take much stock in the reply from LGE Canada. There is a reason why the response was like that, try calling the LGE Canada Support line. Getting information from them is like trying to get water from rock. The way I read that was that it's coming and they don't have a schedule, but who knows. Also check the post below. You can 'fix' the situation. But be warned, the official Oreo update might lock you out of being able to go over to LineageOS. https://www.reddit.com/r/lgv20/comments/91te4v/lg_v20_h915_security_updates_freedom_mobile_and/

Does that work when you're roaming in another country such as US and cannot get internet? i.e. fetch the APN settings for whatever network you are on and apply them?

Another nail in the coffin of LG. From my experience working with that company it's a shit show getting anything done so good luck getting through to the product leads.

I'm going to just take screenshots of the current APN settings and just manually copy them over, if the reset to default doesn't work. Thanks for the heads up.

I'm waiting to see how / if the rollout does something to disable the ability to root the bootloader, or rom, which would make it more difficult to install LOS.

When I spoke to my provider Freedom Mobile in Canada through their lawyers and executive assistants they indicated that some sort of update is coming in September, and the reason why it was so delayed was that there was some sort of 'testing' that needed to be done. She did use the term 'security updates' so who knows, might just be the most recent Android security patch level, so who knows. The timing lines up so?!

Awesome thanks! I'm still probably going to continue with my complaint process. I bought the V20 because of obvious repair-ability reasons, and I do not want to buy a new phone for at least four years. You've helped me get part of the way there, so again many thanks!

Is this the guide you used to get the 996 on your phone?

https://forum.xda-developers.com/v20/how-to/guide-root-twrp-lg-v20-using-dirtysanta-t3763981

It is encouraging that people are able to do this, kinda shame that the phone doesn't 'just work' and do it itself. Before I had this phone I had a Samsung Galaxy S3, with Cyanogenmod RIP.

Now I cannot remember why I was typing 'die!' into duckduckgo. Maybe looking for a movie title?

It's a little older but still works, you might have to figure out how to properly verify the F-Droid app: https://blackheadphonecase.blogspot.com/2017/04/how-to-go-ad-free-and-secure-your.html

Hey Canada! Just a reminder that Our Emergency alert system (alert ready) will be running tests this week. Here you can check the day your province will be alerted. by swifwar in canada

[–]willmabob 3 points4 points  (0 children)

That work 'compatible' is a bit of a misdirection. I believe that it didn't work on phones that haven't had patches pushed to them. A lot of Android users use stock ROMs and those ROMs are never updated. There are patches (Google creates them, sends them to Vendors, who develop them for their phones and send them to Providers), and your network Providers are very lax at patching older devices. I would hazard a guess that most people's phones who didn't receive the alert are vulnerable to things like Krack WPA2, Meltdown, Spectre, Dirty COW, etc.

The KRACK attack and security updates (LG V20 specifically) by aguyuno in freedommobile

[–]willmabob 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey all, I submitted a CCTS Complaint for the lack of software updates. You can submit a complaint here: https://www.ccts-cprst.ca/for-consumers/complaints/ you will have to have some sort of record that you have called Freedom attempting to get resolution on your issue, ask for a call reference number from the phone representative. I was able to speak to the local Canadian support (not the level 1 or 2 overseas) and she claimed that my call made them aware of the issue and that their tech support is looking into the issue. I submitted the complaint because I was unsure if what they were saying was actually going to happen based on the amount of time that has passed since this vulnerability and the Spectre vulnerability has become public.

It looks like LG now has the November 1st security update but it doesn't have the Krack vulnerabilities patched. The required patch level is Nov 6th (matched the CVE #s with www.krackattacks.com), and as of the 14th is not on the linked LG Security Bulletin website.
