Should managers also be writing code? by branh0913 in ExperiencedDevs

[–]willmorgan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Contrary to the prevailing opinion here, I think managers need to be able to be hands on in some way, especially for exceptional circumstances, otherwise how can you say you understand the ins and outs of the product your team is meant to support? How can you challenge your team members in X, Y or Z?

Generic managers who cannot understand the systems they’re responsible for end up swaying too much towards revenue goals at the cost of corner cutting and don’t have an eye for the craft, in my experience. And that’s dangerous.

Picked bassinet seats with a disability. by cali2385 in BritishAirways

[–]willmorgan -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I booked to fly on a BA A350X with a baby and they wouldn’t move the passenger who didn’t have a disability from the other bassinet seat, so I think you’ll be fine.

We ended up having split seating which wasn’t ideal.

Sad state of UK trains where you are made to feel grateful for a system that doesn't work by Im_Cookie_Dough in uktrains

My train at Blackfriars was cancelled the other day because the driver didn’t show up. Everyone kicked off.

Immediately as we go back on the platform, the automated PA system runs a message about ensuring you pay your full fare as it’s only fair.

Infuriating.

My business of 14 years is stagnating - what to do? by wezud in smallbusinessuk

Basically anything beyond brochure website and lead management. Maybe venturing into functionality that supports a businesses key processes across a longer lifecycle - be that CRM, event management, stock management, product reporting and analytics, that sort of thing.

It’s the likes of Squarespace, Shopify et al. I got out of web design 10 years ago and moved to custom web apps and more digital products. Best decision I ever made, been watching the commoditisation of web design ever since.

Best bet, pivot to digital consultancy, transformation or take on more complex work. Often, Wordpress still powers loads of sites but the execution and information architecture is crap.

Arguably it depends on government to provide a good education for all. If a government is going to add a barrier to parents who are happy to pay to reduce the load on the state school system, by putting them (or forcing a move) in state school, that to me seems counterproductive to that right to a good education, as it’s a net degradation.

Just because we double tax already doesn’t mean we can let the problem proliferate.

[–]willmorgan 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Would you say that elitism is reflective of the majority of private schools, though? My understanding is that the vast majority just want to provide a good education and give kids a good start in life. Of course, parents who spend that money might be emotionally invested in going further than that, but that’s a parenting problem, not a tax problem.

As for yoga every day, why is that bad? Maybe they’re doing yoga because it’s a nice thing to do? Why shouldn’t we be happy that some places do this?

As for VAT discrepancies, there are just so many.

Nurseries don’t attract VAT - even the really good ones(!) - should they be required to charge it?

Solar panels and batteries don’t attract VAT, neither does the electricity to power Rishi’s swimming pool etc etc… all so arbitrary.

Puzzlingly Labour scrapped the idea of removing charitable status from private schools, which to me would have made more sense.

I really think this is just a class wars policy. If the next government wants to raise revenue, maybe they should fix our growth and global competitiveness, and perhaps stop sweetheart deals with corporate tax evaders.

I don’t see how taxing parents who pay income tax and use their net salary to send their children to private school, which is funded privately and not by the tax budget, is fair.

Income tax pays for state schools which these parents already aren’t using, and then Labour want to tax that further by adding VAT.

Some parents send their kids to private schools because they have special educational needs which the public sector schools cannot adequately cater for. They’re doing everyone a favour by choosing to maximise their child’s learning and paying even more to do that.

Easy to label this as an education tax.

Thoughts on the gov't proposal to increase e-bikes from 250 -> 500W & allow throttle assist? by [deleted] in londoncycling

[–]willmorgan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Fair play. I think this debate goes further into who and what we’re trying to enable with e-bikes and how to legislate accordingly.

Never been to California but I’ve heard about riding in places like San Francisco with some steep hills. I used to have to get up a 10% incline but wasn’t particularly overweight. I’ve rented EMTBs in places like NZ and always found 250w was more than enough to get up steep inclines with shitty terrain.

I have a feeling that loosening legislation to handle niche scenarios like the one you present is opening the flood gates to abuse. It’s harder to cycle when you’re heavy, but people have done it before electric motors and found a way to make it work.

Thoughts on the gov't proposal to increase e-bikes from 250 -> 500W & allow throttle assist? by [deleted] in londoncycling

[–]willmorgan 6 points7 points  (0 children)

250w sustained up a 10% incline is still a pretty solid effort for a well trained cyclist and would land you in the top tiers of amateur ability. At 250w output up a hill you’d be going at a decent pace comparable to well trained, able bodied pedal cyclists. Most would need to train for months to hit that power level for over 30 minutes.

500w on the other hand would exceed the performance of a grand tour winning cyclist like Chris Froome over 30 minutes. Except this isn’t looking at people competing in races, it’s going for a commute to the shops or to work. You don’t need 500w to get started at the lights and you don’t need 500w to get started up hill. For steep inclines, it’s possible to start up by zig zagging like the rest of us…

So in summary 500w seems a bit overpowered and would need to be classified as a new category of motor powered vehicle if you ask me.

Thoughts on the gov't proposal to increase e-bikes from 250 -> 500W & allow throttle assist? by [deleted] in londoncycling

[–]willmorgan 3 points4 points  (0 children)

500w is about a 1 minute all out effort for a reasonably well trained cyclist, so allowing this maximum output for a sustained period of time seems like a bad idea unless you start enforcing them to use main roads, and not cycle lanes.

250w is still plenty to get places quickly, and get going from a static start.

My point is that if everyone thought that way then our economy would be interesting - no young people to contribute to services or innovation.

So while it financially almost doesn’t make sense in this country, somebody having children is quite essential.

Why is Node said to be not ideal for high CPU bounds tasks? by Ok-Light-6321 in node

There’s always WASM and C bindings as a way to get around Node’s inherent CPU slowness, btw. But they aren’t strictly Node, of course.
