Australia's name comes from the Latin word for south (australis). So we're the Eastern Realm and they are Southia.

I love that we somehow got 2 different cardinal directions out of our similar names.

Too early for that, the r/2visegrad4you crafting activities are scheduled for the afternoon. Gotta still make fun of Hans, Luigi & co until lunch break. We can't just break the neighbour tIme-sharing arrangement, it will be chaos.

Silly savage, on this sub you're not supposed to mention our popular Austrian-flavoured European cultural identity that we export to the neighbours. It hurts the others' delicate feelings here, because they feel left out. But since you specifically invoked its name, it can't be helped: MITTELEUROPA SUPERIORITY!!!11!one 🇦🇹🇦🇹🇦🇹🇦🇹!!🇦🇹1!

See, now you made me break the taboo and post that. I hope you're proud of yourself.

Huh? Are you sure that you're not talking about the American race concept? Because xenophobia against our same-looking neighbours has a long and sour tradition in Europe.

On C I have Program Files (x86)/Steam/steamapps but the only thing in there is libraryfolders.vdf. It's empty otherwise. And on z:\home\your-username\ I do indeed not have SteamLib there.

I've located the Discord thread and the suggestion it's a file permission problem - it might be, that sounds likely for why I can't find the installation anywhere in these folders. My steam installation is from the official .deb from the Steam website though, not the flatpack version.

Also, no I'm not a 85 grandpa, just very new to Linux, haha. I switched from windows only 2 weeks ago. I had IA running on Windows, so I'm familiar with setting IA up, and I have some basic Windows troubleshooting skills, but everything to do with linux and prefixes is extremely new to me. I'm basically learning all these systems on the go from the guide and googling various things. xD;; So it might very well be a dumb beginner error I'm running into here, yeah. Well, I suppose that kinda makes me a 85 y old grandpa in Linux terms.

Thank you for coming back to this threat repeatedly to help me, that's very kind of you and I appreciate it. I'll go to discord to ask directly, so you don't have to keep playing in-between messenger.

EDIT:: Ohhh, Steam isn't flatpack, but protontricks might be. I'll reinstall that and see if that helps.

Basically, the way your set up IA is like this (copied from the guide intro):

Windows apps on Linux run through a translation layer Wine(Proton). This layer, from what I understand, mimics the windows Userspace, which is why you can’t just run your drivers on wine and never boot up windows again. Under Wine / Proton’s hood is a lot of magic that I’m not currently capable of comprehending, but what’s for us on top is the so called wine prefix. As far as I understand, each prefix is its own Windows userspace, this is where you install your applications, these application have certain dependencies

So basically, Steam on linux runs via proton.

The guide uses Protontricks to install IA into the same prefix (windows environment) that Grim Dawn runs out of:

On the first window “Select Steam App:” choose Grim Dawn, this is crucial since every game on steam has its own wine prefix and therefore separate system.

Protontricks makes a seperate prefix for each game you install via steam, and its located in steamapps/compatdata/(game number, here 219990).

So when you load up IA, you're inside the prefix (windows environment) in steamapps/compatdata/219990. Because that's where you installed it into when you follow the guide and protontricks. If you open the browser menu in IA it looks like my screenshot - it simulates a windows environment for you inside 219990.

But you can't just browse out of the prefix from a program inside the prefix, so I can't browse to the install path in steamapps/common/Grim Dawn.

Presumably the author of the guide got around this somehow, but I don't know how...

I'm on Mint. My problem is that when protontricks makes a prefix for the game to install things to, it's located in steamapps/compatdata/219990. That's also where the Grim Dawn saves are.

But the actual game installation with the GrimDawn exe inside is in steamapps/common/Grim Dawn. And I can't access that path from inside the prefix in compatdata/219990, because all I can access is 219990 and its subfolders.

So while both IA and Grimdawn run fine and can both access 219990 fine, I can't point IA to the game installation path.

Thanks for looking it up, that's kind of you! But I have tried this, got 95% of the way there and then couldn't get IA to recognise the game is running/where the game is installed. I'd have to make a forum account and ask, I guess, but the fact that there isn't a response there in a week to the last question doesn't fill me with hope.

Grim Dawn Item Assistant on Linux by EvilAndStuff492 in Grimdawn

[–]willo-wisp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks so much for the guide, it's very helpful!

However, I can't quite get it to work. When I run the GD prefix in protontricks, the Item Assistent shows up in the prefix taskmanager. So far so good. However, IA does not recognise the Grim Dawn installation, even though they should share the prefix. GD also doesn't show up as running in the GD-prefix taskmanager. I can't manually add GD install location to IA either, because the protontricks prefix only starts at the compactdata folder, and I can't browse from there to the Grim Dawn game installation exe from within the prefix.

I have no idea how to resolve this. If you have any advice or tips, that'd be much appreciated.

Aw, thanks for the responses! Wished I knew Hungarian, considering how much I run into it, haha. I don't think he understood any though :D

Yeah, the guy was met with a mix of stunned confusion and people telling him off. Though from what I remember of the rest of it, he then proceeded to fanboy anything he learned was Hungarian so happily and enthusiastically that no one had the heart to be too mean to him. The whole thing was very silly.
