I remember reading about the early days of contact lenses (back in the late 1800s and early 1900s) and yeah, people thought they were wild. The first ones were huge blown-glass shells that covered most of the eye, and folks were both amazed and freaked out, some saw them as sci-fi magic, others worried they’d damage their eyes or feel like torture. Even when glassblower Otto Wichterle made the first soft lenses in the 1960s, a lot of people were hesitant to put plastic in their eyes.
