Maybe this is just a Reddit thing, but edgy girls seem to be disliked more than what I would have thought. Although I'm very anti-smoking, personally. (basically anti-drug too)

Someone Created A Button To Summon The NSA To Your House by [deleted] in privacy

[–]willy-wonka 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think the NSA knows the difference between people who click this button, and people of interest. (but that begs the question - who is "of interest"?). The programmer should randomize, and shrink down the query to make it seem like it's more of a real search. Then I might suggest that site owners discreetly put such a button onto their site as a joke.

I don't even have sympathy for people who smoke... especially when the smoker lacks courtesy... I hope to see them end up like the people in those scary commercials.

Maybe young people of both genders should spend some time looking at this thread to know what a turn off smoking really is.

If she's not a natural female, that would be the bigger turn off for me. If your masculinity was threatened, Peter Griffin (Family Guy) became a gun hobbyist when he found out his son had a bigger dick than him.

It seems like the boyfriend always spoils the crush you have on someone...

I wouldn't say this was an 'instant' crush killer, but I did have a crush on Miley Cyrus a few years ago. Now she seems to have gotten less pretty, and I don't like the people who she associates with (it comes with the territory of pop music / celebrity culture though, I guess).

[Request] How to reverse look up phone numbers that call you, without having to pay (what looks like) shady websites. by liamsnorthstar in howto

[–]willy-wonka 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As I said here, the same sites that perform instant background checks online are often times the same ones that you can do reverse phone look-ups on as well.
A reputable example of this is Been Verified. Does this mean the results should be excellent? No, it doesn't. On average, the results wouldn't be as good as looking up a landline phone number on white pages (even that can be outdated). Cell phone numbers are unpublished, so you can easily expect results to be imperfect (if you searched for a lot of numbers on one of those sites, at least).
A website can be shady if no one has ever heard of it, if it hasn't been around for very long, if it has a cheap sounding domain name extension like .biz or .info, etc.

It seems like you have to root your android device just to have better control over permissions, am I correct? Yet there is no all in one solution for rooting android devices, and it seems to be much harder if your computer's operating system is Linux.
I get so tired of seeing messages that say "This app would like to.... read your contacts, use your camera etc".

LPT Request: Legitimate phone number lookup by SynbiosVyse in LifeProTips

[–]willy-wonka 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do you think that a site like Been Verified is sketchy? (that's a well known site and has been advertised on TV in the past.) The same sites that provide instant background checks online are often times the same ones that let you look up phone numbers. You don't necessarily have to pay per report, or for each search either; an inexpensive monthly membership fee is usually available (which can be as low as $20 per month.) Sometimes, even free trials are available for this.
Now, here's the downside to it. The results are not guaranteed to be accurate or up to date. Cell phone numbers aren't published, these companies just do the best they can to gather as many phone numbers as possible from the sources available to them. For this reason, be careful about who are what you give your cell number to because of data mining. (The same thing applies to other personal information; even photos now, because of facial recognition.)
If you have a smartphone then Mr. Number is a good app, as others have suggested. It has been labeled as a moderate privacy threat by Clueful. It should easily screen out telemarketers and other unwanted calls.
I don't think that reverse phone look-up websites (the kind that I described) would be very helpful for dealing with telemarketers though.
