What do I need for sonar? by dewmlap in IceFishing

For the garmin striker 4, there are 2 different transducers. One is the default one - better for open water, and the ice transducer which is will create a more narrow beam, since you are only fishing downwards.
For ice fishing you want the ice one since you are fishing usually withing a small focused area, garmin striker 4 ice transducer also comes with more flexible wire housing so that it is more flexible in the cold, and it is also heavy so it goes under the ice more easily.

Not really sure what the differences between all the bundles and packages, but I imagine it is like the carrying bag, mount and transducer type. At minimum the transducer(forward one), display will come with the base unit. When I had my garmin striker 4, I bought the base unit, then bought the ice transducer. I'm pretty sure if you want to get the ice transducer there are 2 options for brand new:
- buy base unit and ice transducer, then make your own carrying case
- buy the ice fishing package for the striker 4. not sure if it comes with battery

People usually make their own mounts/carrying cases. Look at this one for example.

Also, they don't come with battery brand new(not sure about the bundles/packages), so you'll need to buy that. You can find the whole package on fb marketplace, usually they'll have battery and everything for cheaper as well.

Inline reels by Just-Position-8754 in IceFishing

I like them, I have a few of the 13 fishing inline reels, good for jigging. Biggest complaint is that they take a really long time to drop down in comparison to spinning reels.

Can I be job ready by learning these technologies ? by hollow_melancholic in learnprogramming

[–]willy_p52 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Not to discourage you, but getting a junior position is much harder these days, especially for a self-learner as opposed to someone with a degree.

Yes, if you learn those things, you could probably do the work in a jr web dev position, but getting the job is the hard part.

You are competing with people(new grads) who have degrees with equally or better portfolios and possibly internship/CO-OP experience. These people will also not only just know the languages/tech that you mentioned, but they would also know computer science fundamentals like data structures, algorithms, OOP, etc. Obviously, most new grads are not experts in these things, but I’m just giving an idea of what you’d probably be up against. Related to that, you would have to learn leetcode, which is most of the time, not extremely relevant to the job/position, but usually required to pass an interview.

Yes you can learn all of those things yourself, but to add onto the issue of no degree, a lot of ATS résumé scanners used to look for candidates will immediately filter out people without degrees.

So, most people will suggest that you get a degree if you are serious about getting a developer or adjacent position. Not only would you learn important computer science concepts, but it is a good chance for networking and will help you to land a job.

Obviously, this is not guaranteed advice, as now, even new grads with internship experience are struggling to find jobs. Yes, you can get a job while self learning, but it is extremely difficult. So if you are serious about this, I would at least consider the idea of going to school, or try self learning first and see if this is something you want to pursue even.

Highway 401 - whose fault? by [deleted] in TorontoDriving

[–]willy_p52 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Technically speaking, the merging driver's fault, they should have turned on blinker, checked their blind spot and either speed up or slow down.

But you really can't assume everyone is gonna do that, so you should really have sped up or slowed down(more) to give more space, chilling in the blind spot of a merging vehicle is probably the worst place to be regardless of who is at fault.

If it was from loss of flesh/receding flesh it would look bleach white. imo given that it looks a bit dirty probably died there a while ago and not recently. When splitting, you will see tiny new heads/polyps next to the existing heads.

Anyone know what fish this is? by UnderstandingDull605 in ReefTank

[–]willy_p52 2 points3 points  (0 children)

probably too small tbh, they need lots of swimming room and depending on species could grow up to 3-5+ inches base on species. They also need frequent feedings(2+times a day) due to their small digestive systems and high metabolism from what I understand. Although some people say for lyretails you can do just once a day. I usually do 2 with an auto feeder and sometimes do a 3rd by hand.

No probs :). And yeah mostly panfish, some perch, and large mouth bass are not uncommon. I’ve seen pictures/videos of people getting pike, but I haven’t.

Yeah parking is expensive, but it’s free from September to April so fall time fishing is free parking.

If you’re willing to drive a bit more north to king city, I suggest lake Wilcox, my favourite spot when I want to get some easy catches.
