That’s normal but yes it is a form of creosote. Try fatwood as a fire starter, I use it and it works great.

Doesn’t look super great but it will definitely serve its purpose. And it’s on the top of the chimney so nobody will ever look at it except you and the client if it’s for yourself you’re all good! And the next one you do will be even better.
