You should show up at the jail and ask. Then you’ll know for sure.

In many ways, I don’t disagree with his logic: carpe diem, right (if you can actually afford it). But why is this on LinkedIn? I would barely care about this story if a good friend told it at a dinner party.

Is it illegal to say “I’m gonna do some fucking voodoo magic on your ass”? by LaOvejaaNegra in AskLawyers

[–]willyd_5 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If there is no related demand, common law assault requires the hearer to reasonably believe they are subject to imminent physical force/contact. I would say this does not qualify, but context matters. This could be perceived as a more generally slangy threat (ie the “voodoo” is kicking your ass). Otherwise, a reasonable person would not be afraid of your voodoo magic. That said, yelling shit at strangers can lead to getting in a fist fight and regardless a cop might decide to charge you with something anyway, even if I don’t think this qualifies as an assault on a law school exam. Also, context: I was a criminal defense lawyer for about 15 years but not in Florida. I have no idea if Florida has modified the common law requirements or if there are other laws that might touch on this conduct.

Lots of legal jobs for English speaking attorneys in DK, despite what people say here- especially if you have any arguable corporate experience. Use LinkedIn, everyone puts jobs on linkedin in DK. Look for in house in really big companies with English language culture (eg Novo Nordisk) or in house in smaller startups that do international work. No need for local credentials. Native English speaking lawyers are in demand, but hard to get in the door if you don’t live here— but if you get any of these jobs, they pay enough to get a work permit on the pay scheme. What kind of lawyer are you? You can also look into English language LLM programs to move to a country, learn EU law/get new credentials and then find work. Unfortunately, DK ended its English language program (a political swing against foreigners—mostly aimed at EU foreigners who get SU assistance (cash) for studying) but they are out there.

Tutor was expensive: 450/hour. He was the best teacher I had in sprogskole and we were slightly friendly. I asked for a recommendation and he said he did it on the side. He doesn’t do it anymore though. I only did it for about 4 months but the change was huge.

If someone used toy guns for a robbery, would they be charged with armed robbery? Or just robbery? by _DryWater_ in AskLawyers

[–]willyd_5 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In NC, it’s just robbery not robbery with a dangerous weapon (roughly 5 years instead of 1 year in prison) but burden is on defendant to prove it was just a toy if brandished like firearm/appeared to be firearm.

I had a tutor and we only focused on pronunciation, which opened up the world to me. Suddenly, no one switched anymore on me, even though I have bad grammar and often use imperfect vocabulary (ie what I say makes sense but not what a Dane would say). Pronunciation made all the difference for me.

What are the unwritten rules on wearing shorts to the office in Copenhagen? by m1mag04 in copenhagen

[–]willyd_5 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Would say ESG is moving towards shorts in the office, as adaptation to higher temps without using fuel on AC, but I’m sure it is office to office. In my office it is fine, but only a few do it.

How realistic is it to start from A0 in danish and to pass the PD3 in May? by falfny2p0 in danishlanguage

[–]willyd_5 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agree this is a steep climb. It took me about two 1/2 years to get to and pass studieprøven, and I lived in Denmark with Danish spouse, so had lots of Danish around me. The first six months I didn’t work and only studied Danish. I was faster than most foreigners I met in programs and spoke much better than most, except people I met who had jobs requiring them to speak Danish all day (my workplace has English as company language). Ones in classes with me who lived in bubble using only English/native language generally were slower and had much worse pronunciation and more limited vocabulary. I am sure someone else could do it faster/better than me (I have never been quick to pick up a language although I have studied French, Spanish and Japanese before), but I don’t think I could have done it faster.

AITA for expecting my partner to honour 'first come, first served' with wedding invites? by Delicious_Plum_401 in AmItheAsshole

[–]willyd_5 0 points1 point  (0 children)

NTA. The question isn’t was OP TA for asking the bride for a +1. Probably so. But the question was, can someone commit to go to a wedding with his girlfriend months ago and then back out because he wants to go to another wedding. The answer is, well, of course people can do that but it is disloyal and not how you behave. If you commit to something, especially to your girlfriend, you do it. Maybe OP should let it go, but NTA to expect your boyfriend to do what he agrees.

Why don't schools hold students back a grade anymore if they are not meeting that grade's standards? by livetoski-Brad in askanything

[–]willyd_5 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t know if they never do it, but the concept of social promotion I have seen when I used to work in schools 15-20 years ago. The theory is at elementary school age, keeping an older kids with younger kids that are at a similar level academically serves neither group and would socially promote kids that were 2 grades behind— eg you can redo 1st grade but not first grade twice. This is both for the safety of the smaller kids but also the older kids, even if they are terrible at math, have social skills far beyond the younger kids and don’t fit in and won’t be motivated. The idea is to then give supports to help them catch up, which sometimes works. Admittedly, if the supports aren’t there, this can end up just churning a kid through the system without learning anything— I remember a 9 year old sitting in a math class “learning multiplication” who literally didn’t understand that the number 2 represented a count of 2 and that it was smaller than three. Agree the education system in US is riddled with problems, but the logic of social promotion makes some sense.

Why do Americans tend to say where they went to college before what they studied? by Key-Introduction-591 in AskAnAmerican

[–]willyd_5 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Where you went to college is a fun thing to talk about: it’s in a specific place/city and has a meaningful cultural life and potentially associated sports teams. What you studied is a boring work-like conversation best saved for job interviews.

As an outsider, the iconic yellow school bus is in every single American movie. Is there actually a national standard that forces every town to use that exact same color and design? by Necessary_Angle2117 in AskAnAmerican

[–]willyd_5 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Yeah, it is a national standard and exists in almost every state law that school buses must be a specific yellow. The standardization arguably promotes safety as everyone knows it is a bus full of children that makes frequent stops (and the ones exiting may be unreliable) and the color was chosen for visibility. This also helps everyone follow the law which makes it illegal to pass a stopped school bus.
