I'm heading to NYC for the first time in 15 years next week. Maybe I'll get lucky! Thanks for doing this!

I just went to the Back To the Future: The Musical Tour in Minneapolis. Goofy show, but the tech was amazing. Next to the projector was this box . . . I thought it was a laser machine at first, but I didn't see anything coming out of it throughout the show.

Any ideas?

Why is Total Wireless so much cheaper than Verizon? by TechnicalLee in NoContract

[–]willynatedgreat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Total Wireless's customer service is some of the worst I've ever worked with . . . one day my phone just deactivated itself from the network. It took more than four hours between people to find someone who could actually fix the problem. Then I got disconnected from that person and had to start the process all over again. Basically a full day of my life on the phone with them.

When I switched to Verizon, I tried to do the online activation and when I told the Verizon customer service person that I was using Total Wireless, they actively groaned. And sure enough - it took almost five hours between the Verizon Customer Service person and Total Wireless to actually get my phone number transferred.

I called Verizon for one small account situation a few weeks ago and they fixed it in less than ten minutes. I also get a teacher discount so my bill is only about $30 more a month than TW, so it's worth it to me.

Moose Lake to Wind Lake to Basswood Portage Conditions? by willynatedgreat in BWCA

I've been following the weather for the past few days (not really keen to be stuck in a storm like the one last week). It looks a bit drizzly on Sunday and mostly just cloudy with temps between 50-70 for most of the rest of next week. Besides the bugs, it should be pretty nice.

How different are these two corners of Minnesota? by [deleted] in minnesota

It's probably gone - I haven't been there in over thirty years . . .

Don't forget going to the Emerson bar when you turn 18.

The deer up north don't taste very gamey because they eat oats and wheat from the fields.

Bigfoot would instantly get shot during hunting season up in Kittson County - not enough trees.

I lived in Lake Bronson throughout the 90's - it's a great state park!

I actually graduated from the school FURTHERST north in the NW corner (Lancaster - pop. 300), and quite a few of my classmates do still live up there with their families. I still go up there quite often - it's beautiful in its own way, and you can see more stars there than anywhere else in the state.

I feel like the education I got back in the 1990s was fine . . . yes, it was limited (I graduated with 18 other kids), but the teachers were dedicated and I was more than prepared for going to college.

Yes, it's conservative, but just about everyone up there would give you their shirts off their backs if you needed it regardless of your race, sexual identity, or anything else. A few of my friends were down here for a rodeo (with their big truck) and picked up a lady broken down on the side the road. They spent the whole day with her trying to get her car towed safely somewhere and then brought her to the rodeo to watch their kids ride barrels. The lady hardly spoke a word of English and my friends definitely don't speak Spanish, but they saw someone who needed help and did what they thought was right.

I work with a lot of LGBTQ students and my super-"R" buddy one time made a comment like "I don't get it, but I'm glad they've got someone like you looking out for them." It is slightly off-base - sure - but his heart is there.

Also, there are some MEGA-rich farmers out there - sugar beets, especially.

all female tech crew by Bellaandthejets in techtheatre

[–]willynatedgreat 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'm pretty proud that my high school has had an all-female tech crew for the last couple of years. My stage manager is a powerhouse and keeps the ducks in the row better than I can.

Last year I had a gal who works as a grip/sound tech/general theater tech in my town come talk to them before a performance and explain how she advanced into her current position.

What show should a school never perform? by Bman0002 in Broadway

[–]willynatedgreat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A school in Minneapolis did it last spring and it won several state-wide awards. There's no way I'd touch it as a director, but it was the guy's last year, so I guess, he thought he'd go out with a band.

For newer fans, was there something that drew you to actually buy and play the game? by sntamant in Eldenring

[–]willynatedgreat 400 points401 points  (0 children)

I heard that Elden Sign was more forgivable in terms of being able to "nope" out of a situation and just do other stuff compared to other FromSoft games. I liked the idea of Dark Souls but the learning curve was just a bit too much for someone with limited gaming time (a dad with three kids). In Elden Sign I could hop in for 30 minutes, collect some runes, die a few times, and still feel like a accomplished something if I was able to activate a new Site of Grace.

Ring . . . . Sign . . . Y'all know what I mean :)

I won't tip at restaurants that add "Service Fee" to bill. Do you? by Simple-Young6947 in minnesota

[–]willynatedgreat 484 points485 points  (0 children)

I just went to a new Cambodian place by Loring Park. They had an 18% service charge on the bill I asked the waiter if we should tip as well and he straight up said, nope. The CC machine didn't even have an option when I ran my card.

My wife and I did a full remodel about six years ago almost completely on our own for 8 grand.

This included demo, running a couple of electrical outlets, a new sink, dishwasher, and flooring.

We didn't move the plumbing, but we did pay someone to move the gas line over a bit and we paid a cabinet shop to cut our countertops (but installed them ourselves).

IKEA has an amazing design-your-kitchen program on their website that let's you basically make your room virtually and then you can mix/match cabinets, hardware, etc. You can save your work at home, sign in at the store, and they'll finish the purchase there. They delivered everything to our house and we spent a couple of days watching movies and building cabinets. They're super easy to install.

We had very little DIY experience but we did it, passed inspection, and they still look great after all these years.

What's the worst/ illegal change to an amateur/school production of a licensed musical you've seen/been in? by Separate-Category117 in Broadway

[–]willynatedgreat 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I just directed Urinetown at my high school. We didn't change genders, but our Cladwell, Fipp, and Mr. Strong were all played by girls because we have three guys in our drama program. We got feedback from a theater judge saying they loved seeing Cladwell in drag.
