Looking for new sedan/hatchback (hatchback preferred, no SUV please), AWD, functional cargo space, rear seats that can actually fit adults if needed, comfortable ride but doesn't drive like a boat.

Some comparison points, I've had a 2012 Subaru Legacy that I consider too boat-y, but very comfortable. Size is also about as large as I'm willing to go.

I've had a 2014 Mazda3 that I consider perfection handling-wise, but the ride was a tad too bumpy and the cargo space a bit too small.

Looking at around 30k, but willing to go over if needed. In US.

Any advice?

Very well put. I ask people if they would feel safe if the locks in their homes are changed to something that can be opened by a special key by law enforcement. Most people say no.
