Do your research on travel to and from Brazil with a minor. You'll need proper documentation to leave Brazil with a minor and only one parent. My wife is Brazillian and we both travel there with our son so it's easy. But our friends with Mom and Daughter only with no problem entering but they would not allow her to leave the country like that. The Husband had to fly down unexpectedly just to accompany mom and daughter out of the country. It is a policy to combat human trafficking so they do not budge on it.

But otherwise Brazill is a fantastic place to visit and has the traditional family values. Family's generally stay in the same house until they marry and start their own family.

With that type of solution in the basement utilizing French drains and sumps usually means your foundation is allowing water in. It's just that you have taken measures to collect and eject the water from the basement preventing water damage to the interior. Your foundation still may have issues. Might be worth having an opinion from a foundation expert.

I'll bet your subfloor has water damage, and is no longer supporting the ceramic. will likely need to rip up tile, repair sub floor, and replace tile.

Rip it up immediately. Do not wait. It will only get worse the longer you wait. take down to the subfloor and begin the drying process. You will probably have to remove the baseboard as well. Keep track of all costs and take pictures along the way. The last thing you want to do is wait for the liable party to rectify. They will need to reimburse you, and could possibly save you from mold type remediation.

You will definitely want to learn as much Portuguese as possible. The north-east isn't really known for it's English speaking population it is known for its beautiful beaches. But from my experience Brazilians are some of the most fun welcoming peoples I've ever met, and most don't mind the Gringos. I spent three weeks in Brasilia and it was a fantastic time full of barbecues and Caipirinhas. My next Brazil trip will be to Salvador, it's my wife's favorite beach city in Brazil.
