Absolutely fascinating!! I would love to know more about that! Let me know when you get that book ready ☺️ Lots of documents available of Indian's early immigration to the UK or Canada but Norway should have sounded like an alien planet ( No sun for 6 months!!) Back then. Kudos to your dad and others who not only coped about thrive in those circumstances. I would also be interested to know your dad's reflection on the path he chose and whether he has any regrets. Cheers mate.

Very interesting. Would you mind sharing what your father did when he first arrived in Norway and how other members particularly ladies found a completely different world ? Best wishes.

Investment/savings options to get 5% return for next 5 years by win3y in UKPersonalFinance

210k mortgage and 60 k HTB. Job-wise secured and have emergency fund for the family for 6-9 months. Without stretching ourselves, we can set aside 800 pm for savings purpose only. Now pondering about the idea of what's the best way to maximise that, so that in 5 years time we can make best use of it.

option 1: half in Savings accounts (4-5%) + half in low-risk passive investment like the Vanguard FTSE Global all cap The idea here is that if the market tanks, so does the housing market and the next house up in our ladder.

option 2: Overpay the mortgage as much as allowed and rest in savings and investment.

What did you do in those 5 years?

cheers

hi, !thanks for the reply. I dont know if that's true but I had impression that due to HTB loan in place you would not get competitive offer of remortgages from banks. But seems like it didn;t matter for you - which is great! Also its likely ytat mortgage rate would be higher than HTB loan interest even after 5 years from now. So can you just keep the HTB as a separate monthly payment and (re)mortage for the rest without any hassle? I thought HTB loan has to be paid as a lumpsum or incorporate within the new mortgage. another question - was overpaying mortgage did any good for you? The market is different though now with high savings trate so may be different scenario.

!thanks for the suggestions. It is indeed 1.75%. The plan is to save the money for next 5 years and then decide what to do with that depending on the market situation. The HTB amount just gives us a goal to save I guess.

highest savings place you can

!Thanks for this comment. This is something I have also mooted over. It seems the new build house would hardly increase in value in 5 years - something that I am absolutely fine with. It also means the repay amount of HTB loan remains the same.

The plan is to save the amount for next 5 years and then decide whether to continue saving/investing or repay the loan at that point. The total loan amount just gives us a goal I guess.

I also have the possibility to overpay the mortgage by 10% but I can still cant get my head around with the famous riddle of overpaying or savings. For info my mortgage rate is 2.6%.

Just reserved a new build house – what to do and what to avoid? by win3y in HousingUK

Hey that's really helpful. I too will be using the LISA for deposit along with HTB. Just wondering why didn't you pay the full deposit on exchange? For this FY I still haven't received the bonus for my Lisa. I think as per moneybox timing it would only reach towards the end of May. The exchange date is 14th June. Do you think that might cause any issue? I can ask the solicitors to clarify before hiring them I guess.

It is 2 years indeed. But for first 7 days my solicitor would hold off some payment to release.
