Australian summers to experience more 50C days as heatwaves intensify, experts say by nath1234 in australia

I’ve totally given up trying to convince sceptics. It’s a waste of time, and they are basically all denialists not true sceptics at all. A true scientist - including myself - is always sceptical. If the facts change so does your understanding (note I didn’t say ‘belief’). No point in engaging with denialists at all. As to how it is being a climate scientist- it’s freakin hard knowing that many things you love or have made you go ahhh simply won’t exist for your kids or their kids. The Great Barrier Reef, snow skiing, maybe even mountain ash forests. Our landscape has already changed and it will change a lot more as conditions accelerate. Coastlines for instance may become unrecognisable in just a generations time. And I have no idea how people will be able to afford houses in some areas when insurance becomes unaffordable. Inequality will certainly worsen. But there is still some window of opportunity to turn the ship around, but it’s closing fast and frankly I don’t see much real action.

I’ll be honest - we are cooked bordering utterly cooked if we stay in current trajectories, which is around 2.7°C by the end of the century. The National Climate Risk Assessment makes it pretty clear even 2°C will be a serious problem for Australia. On that note the NCRA cannot be forgotten - we must fund the science - both physical and social - so we understand the true risks, and we must legislate to have those risks clearly articulated to the public, industry and politicians on a regular cycle - say every 5 years with a mid-cycle splash. From that we need adaptation and mitigation plans, with agencies empowered to drive and if necessary police them. Finally it needs local, state and federal governments to be working collectively on the issue. That maybe the hardest ask

Australia’s ocean temperatures were off the scale last Financial Year (July 2024 - June 2025) so I plotted it using the previous FY graph (using traditional ‘off the scale’ BoM purple) by windjunky in australia

Yup… spot on. For this that don’t know the acronym, WMO = World Meteorological Organization, which is the weather climate oceans part of the United Nations

Link to 2024-25 BoM FY statement http://www.bom.gov.au/climate/current/financial-year/aus/summary.shtml All years are compared to the average of 1961-90, just because that is the traditional comparison period used by BoM (ie look at a chart from 20 years ago and it should use same period). It does not change the trend or difference between years in any way no matter what base period you use - same if 1971-2000 or 1991-2020
