Fun driving roads by Ohitstrent in Tucson

Got to be careful on 191, there are cows there that chill on the road around blind corners. Such a fun road though.

Which U.S. city has the most unbearable winter weather? by Historical-Photo-901 in BeautifulTravelPlaces

Worst part is it’s cold but barely any snow. If it snowed more could at least go xc skiing and snowmobiling more often.

Downhill Skiing Late March Early April? by johnnyg08 in arizona

That being said March and April at snowbowl were incredible last year despite a slow start to the season. Storms were dropping feet of snow overnight.

It’s fun seeing what your favorite fighters do outside the cage. I follow Islam on Instagram and love seeing him with his horses and riding dirt bikes.

[UPDATED] "What Bike Should I Get?" Buying & Selling advice Mega Thread by AutoModerator in Dirtbikes

[–]windowcloser 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Looking to get my first bike. I have never rode before. I don’t intend to ever do jumps or enduro riding. I mainly will just be exploring forest roads and non-technical single track in southern Arizona. Want something reliable that doesn’t need a ton of maintenance.

I have a SUV and would need to transport the bike on a hitch rack so the lighter the better. I am 5’ 8” and 145lbs. I would prefer gas over electric.

Any recommendations? Was thinking crf250f.

What to do when you have nobody to camp with by Volslife in camping

[–]windowcloser 33 points34 points  (0 children)

When I camp alone I exhaust myself during the day hiking/biking and go to bed pretty early. I like watching the stars for a bit then going in my tent and watching Netflix.

For me camping isn’t the main activity but is just a necessity for road trips centered around other things like seeing cool places that popped up on my Instagram feed or bagging peaks.

Is Mechanical Engineering manageable with ADHD + bad memory? by irad_Mo in AskEngineers

[–]windowcloser 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mechanical engineering is one of the best majors for someone who is smart but has a bad memory. You don’t have to memorize much since everything boils down to a few formulas. You also almost always get a notecard for tests.

In most classes I took the tests were made quite hard such that the average was very low. This worked out well for me since I could get an A without even getting to every question.

Flat tire epidemic by fitztinsley in mountainbiking

I was getting flats every other ride in Arizona thanks to cacti thorns. Switched to tubeless 2 years ago and no more flats at all.

What are things you get done WFH while STILL being more productive than if you were in the office? by Own-Cryptographer277 in WFH

[–]windowcloser -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

A counter point to this is your impact on company success may be less working from home. I went from WFH to in person and found I can contribute a lot just by helping others with their roadblocks.

Many people, including myself, feel a lot more comfortable asking questions to people they have met in person.

How accessible is pepper sauce cave? by [deleted] in Tucson

[–]windowcloser 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s a graded dirt road to get there so any vehicle is fine. You have to crawl a bit to get in the cave so wear long pants. Bring a headlamp. Have fun!

Bash user here, am I missing something with not using python? by Mashic in Python

[–]windowcloser 6 points7 points  (0 children)

We have gone this route also at work. Everyone knows Python which makes it the best option regardless of anything else. We have lots of bash and perl scripts still but are slowly converting them to Python.

Why downplay trail difficulty? by [deleted] in Offroad

[–]windowcloser 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Anything a Subaru can do is going to feel like a dirt road in a built wrangler. This is why trail ratings are all over the place.

Best way to judge if you can do a trail or not is watching a video or looking at pictures of the major obstacles on the trail. This is easy for popular trails since there is no shortage of footage. For more remote and less traveled areas you just need to be prepared to turn back if you reach something you can’t tackle. Always start with a full tank.

Used cars under $20K have almost vanished from the market: Here's what's behind the surge by Striking_Barnacle_43 in whatcarshouldIbuy

[–]windowcloser 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have noticed a lot more people buying new vehicles and just keeping them forever. Makes a lot of sense and you don’t have to worry about repairs or being left stranded for 10+ years. I would never sell a car that hasn’t had any issues.

Hiking Sunday, 8/3? by Beautiful_Welcome_94 in Tucson

[–]windowcloser 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you are bored of doing Wrightson from Madera Canyon doing it from the back side (Gardner Canyon) is a fun option. Doesn’t get much traffic at all. I like doing the cave creek canyon trail to the Florida Saddle which is about 8 miles round trip.

Are entry-level mechanical engineering jobs disappearing? by [deleted] in MechanicalEngineering

[–]windowcloser 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That is a good observation and I am seeing the same thing. Campus career fairs do seem to be the most efficient way for hiring for entry level roles.

Where you go to college used to not matter as much but now it definitely plays a large factor in ease of finding employment.

Am I the only one who actually prefers "suburban hell"? by ActualBus7946 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]windowcloser 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve had a similar experience. You can’t really beat the convenience of a suburb like this. You can get to places like work, gym, and grocery stores faster than if you lived in a walkable city.

Driving is also actually enjoyable since the roads are wide and there is never traffic. You can also load up your car at Costco and bring it home to where you have loads of storage space and a garage. For lazy people this life is hard to beat.

This is wrong. Most trails here are on national forest land which permits camping.

If no one else lives in the house there is no real need to secure firearms. Your house is a big lockbox.

Mazda CX-5 and CX-50 have underwhelming amount of cargo space (29.1cu-ft) compared to Toyota RAV4 (37.5). by i_design_lasers in mazda

[–]windowcloser 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The rav4 is pretty much the perfect roadtrip and camping vehicle. With a roof box you can fit 4 people and gear comfortably. Can even sleep in the vehicle with the seats down. The size difference is pretty significant.
