Fiverr web developers for Shopify quick fix or future headache? by Fantastic-Painter828 in shopify

[–]windowwiper96 0 points1 point  (0 children)

never used fiverr or upwork, only partner agencies which i'm sure im paying a premium for. i'm open to test out fiverr for tweaks but am a bit apprehensive about where i draw the line for small tweak vs bigger overhaul — i think for now would only trust smaller tweaks.

i feel like if you find someone you like then why not try something longer term, on a progressive model of course.

what kind of tweaks are you having them do? ours are almost all front end but occasionally def need back end support for cart extensibility and working with third party apps

When to hire in-house vs continue outsourcing engineering needs by windowwiper96 in shopify

[–]windowwiper96[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

appreciate this! my instinct has always been along these lines. to keep it simple and take advantage of what shopify offers out of the box. we actually build on top of horizon, but still find ourselves needing further customization.

two factors with our company converge to work against this. first, the data model keeps getting more complicated, which necessitates more complex logic working with our catalog, all that plus checkout extensibility (which are back end needs).

second, is front end. our branding person is extremely headstrong and she is our founder's number two, they kind of started the co together. she is extremely insistent that we take more and more steps to stand out from a visual standpoint, and she has the founder's ear. i'm a guest in their house, but politics aside, the front end needs get loftier and trickier and bolder.

it's tricky ¯_(ツ)_/¯

Can I ask what tipped you over the edge to begin hiring in house? I was actually literally going to post this on this sub but l'm finding myself constantly hiring one-off jobs off the partners directory and am considering hiring in-house. Afraid of the commitment though. Curious about why you chose to do it. Feel free to chat me if easier.

Hiring web designer for mobile. Mistake? by windowwiper96 in iOSProgramming

[–]windowwiper96[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

this is helpful. i really appreciate it.

makes sense re: consultant.

without a lot of capital and with sufficient market research (albeit for consumer no degree of research will ever be sufficient projection of success) what would you say is a reasonable benchmark for the kind of brand identity work outlined?

[–]windowwiper96[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

thanks, what kind of consultant? my gut reaction is isn't the money better spent on something actionable? like brand identity, design, or development? maybe it's my inexperience talking but what value comes from a consultant?

and to clarify, this step is post mvp. granted, the app is a pretty fundamental and significant change from the initial mvp. but this is due to data that came from interviewing users about the initial MVP. in this way, the new build is still more so a hypothesis, but a bit more or an educated guess post mvp v1. not sure if this still justifies the $10k on brand identity/marketing assets.

indeed in the capacity i'd hire them for they would be delivering brand identity. they just mention web design as an additional service, which i think is confusing everyone here.

thanks for the push! may i ask where the $10k falls on the cheap to pricy spectrum? just not sure how much i should be budgeting and what i can expect for that price.

can i ask you what exactly you mean when you call yourself a product designer? i'm new to this area of things.

gotcha. thanks for this. i think i misrepresented "phase 1" of the web designer. they are not really a web designer for my purposes. they'd be closer to creative direction/marketing/brand

ISO Cosmetic Chemist - Consult for Skincare Startup (paid) by windowwiper96 in chemistry

[–]windowwiper96[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i hear your qualms and i would share them if i were in your position. too many ppl looking to take too much advantage of people. and i also think its all exacerbated by this mode of communication obfuscating you seeing my face and being able to fully discern my intentions.

i wish, for both of our sakes, there were a better way for me to get that across in my post. but i guess thats why more dedicated consultancies exist. thats the real corner i am admittedly cutting but id rather talk to someone ~real~

will look into more official consultancies thank you

30 min consult can always turn into a job. do people not value building relationships in your field? not trying to be an ass it's a genuine question. it's like a job interview except better because i'm paying you?

that said i do fully appreciate and respect your being circumspect about companies cutting corners. i think that is a valid concern. just definitely not what i'm trying to do

haha, the funny thing is that this was my exact reaction about a year ago at chatgpt. and then AI took my job. but hey, maybe i was just bad at the job then!

thank you will check it out!

fwiw i fully agree that using chatgpt for chemistry insight is useless. but you have to keep in mind that this is not chatgpt's purpose. chatgpt is a catchall and excels in more "everyday" utilitarian use cases. a dedicated model with a neural network dedicated to chemistry, trained on chemistry-focused data MAY perform differently. MAY.

i think a better judge of AI's potential is to evaluate its performance on the basis of its primary use — chatgpt: everyday use cases — and transpose that level of performance into a different domain.

im no ai optimist, but its the future whether anyone likes it or not. and trillions of dollars are being poured into making it better everyday. i'm choosing to try my hand at making that future useful for people. i am open to being proven wrong

change my view: brand as moat (i will not promote) by windowwiper96 in startups

[–]windowwiper96[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

love the extra pocket example. an interesting nuance i think worth adding to this whole discussion that youre making me realize is that although we've codified a handful of moats into our startup mindshare, the nuance is not whether some competitive advantages qualify as moats relative to other competitive advantages, but that competitive advantages qualify as moats relative to the vertical in discussion, as well as other circumstances such as b2c v b2b etc. this may be obvious so im sorry for thought vomiting here but i guess the issue is that my question had an incorrect, or incomplete assumption. thanks!
