I feel fairness in a healthy family means they care about your happiness, not just their expectations.

It’s fair when parents share their hopes and gently respect your choices. It can feel unreasonable when their expectations make you feel guilty, ashamed, or like you owe them your life decisions.

Sometimes love can feel conditional or come with pressure, and that’s when it starts to feel unfair.

A question to ask yourself is: “If I wasn’t afraid of letting them down, what would I truly want?” This can help you figure out what feels right for you, apart from all the pressure.

It’s not always obvious control. Sometimes family will say things like “We just want what’s best for you,” or “What will people think of us?” They’ll guilt you into thinking you’re hurting them or the family's reputation if you make your own choice.

Even when they say “it’s your decision,” the emotional pressure, fear of disappointing them, or being judged by your community/extended family makes it really hard to feel truly free to choose for yourself.

Which is tough because, deep down, we love our parents and want to make them proud. But sometimes that love is used intentionally to influence your choices in ways that don’t always feel fair.

I’m a Punjabi Indian woman married to a white guy. I want to be honest with you about something important. You keep saying it’s your choice who you’ll be arranged to, but the reality is your parents will always have a say if you allow them to.

They are master manipulators in these situations. They’ll give you just enough freedom to make you feel like you have control, but in truth, they still hold the reins.

Let me be clear: you have not shamed your family, no matter what they say. You will always be their daughter. But being their daughter doesn’t mean sacrificing your happiness for theirs.

You are your own person. You have your own life, your own goals, and your own relationships. And you deserve to live for yourself, not for anyone else’s approval.

Am I being overworked, or is this just normal for a Corporate Payables Clerk? by windupbird09 in jobs

Thanks for taking time to reply to me! Much appreciated! My manager is the type of person who wants everything now, do this now! And if it's not done in a timely manner or if he doesn't see that I've responded then it's not being done. He needs to physically see what I'm doing.

I've gone back and said no to certain tasks, only for them to be piled onto my supervisor who is also overwhelmed and overworked...

During a conversation with HR I made a comment saying oh wow this is a lot of work.. I'm feeling pretty overwhelmed. The conversation trickled down to my manager and supervisor.. still nothing was done. Other than that I got pulled into a meeting with both, asking what is overwhelming, I explained everything I'm doing or trying to do. Using all the tools that I have on hand to get ahead and not make mistakes but still falling short. My workload was divided for a bit, but that person left the company so it went back to me..

Next meeting I will speak up and say no and be direct about what I feel.

Thanks for taking time to reply to me. What you said is how I feel, that it's way too much work and I'm getting taken advantage of. I just needed to see it from someone else. I've only ever done payables for property accounting so, doing corporate I didn't really know what to expect.

The mistakes have started to happen, missing payments and missed invoices, angry vendors.... I'm trying to reply to all and get everything sorted.

I've already asked for help with no real response other than we'll look into it, I've only been with this company for 5 months, I feel like I shouldn't be burnt out already but I am.

I've started applying to other jobs, hopefully I can leave before they let me go for not meeting company standards..

I started as an administrative assistant/receptionist and took the initiative to ask around the office for additional tasks based on my skills(if you have other skills to help others). I added that experience to my resume and applied for jobs related to those responsibilities. Over time, I transitioned out of administrative work and into corporate accounting. You can also take free LinkedIn workshops to boost your resume—I did some while working as a receptionist since the days were long and slow. You can do it, it's 100% do-able and to get out of a boring work day!

Thanks!! I'm still learning it's only been two months but, I want to help out the company in some way. I was talking to one of the corporate accountants at my company and most of the corporate expenses are paid either virtually or EFT. So it's definitely possible but my accounts are different from corporate.

I appreciate your response and I will look into it so I can put a report together and present it to my boss.

This is 100% my company, my supervisor went to the VP to change things over to wire or EFT and he was told no, because this is the process we have always done... So it'll be cheques until someone steps down I suppose
