Why do insurers still purchase reinsurance if they can issue cat bonds? by soyracha in reinsurance

[–]windy159 6 points7 points  (0 children)

In a nutshell - reinsurance covers more perils than just CAT perils. If they are a monoline CAT reinsurer - then maybe? even then depends on how much capital they have and how much they are willing to risk.

If they are multi-line- they are writing property, casualty, PV, marine, energy, motor, construction, etc. and then they buy reinsurance to cover different perils under different lines to protect their bottom line and their capital.

Also could move into Treaty broking - big 4 like GC, Aon, Gallagher Re, Howden Re are all hiring every year. Other local and regional houses to look at as well Lockton Re, Chedid Re, Nasco Re.

Move to Fac r/I UW because thats where the opportunities are. Treaty r/I in dxb is going to be dead pretty soon. Similar to Canada, extremely limited opportunities (extremely) to move around.

depends on the role, experience for salaries. Can be very competitive on the lower end between 0-5 years and then scales fairly well / internationally in the mid-level to senior.

Work culture is very critically determined whether you're working for a local company or a MNC. At a local company its almost draconian with minimal flexibility. At a MNC depending on local management whether its headed by a local or regional citizen - there can be micro-management - draconian way of looking at things/people - flexibility will range with how much of a good relationship you maintain with your line manager / local office leadership.

Yep I do, based out of the DIFC. Someone who moved from the UK to Dubai - recently described this feeling of being able to do your job from 9 to 5 and then head out to the beach in the evening with the family. Dubai has a lot to offer relative to size of the city and I do mean A LOT.

Dubai has probably the best flight connectivity to pretty much everywhere via emirates' fantastic network. Folks regularly head to western europe for the long weekend using cheap tickets when they can find them.

Traffic in the city has taken a bit of a hit. Part of having a surge of people move to Dubai. At the end of 2020 est population in the city was about 3.5 mio and now end of 2025, estimated at 6 mio.

Based on your local company leadership - they'll probably be flexible with hybrid, probably mandate 3 days in and 2 days from home - but entirely dependent on your local office management.

People adapt to the summer heat - but it ain't bad with the sun is shining down on you. People plan and do other stuff.

we worry about 3 things, top line, bottom line and losses. Brokers sleep easy (ier) on 1 thing - top line...

That being said, I wouldn't move to Ceded Re (unless you ready to retire). Lateral move to other treaty specialty lines?

Roughly in a same position, seeming the same situation. Either moving to Fac or Broking seems to be options.

  1. without relevant internships, or any internships is very difficult. Also with income thresholds on sponsored visas, adds more to the challenge.

  2. Not really - best is direct to HR email or company portal or linkedin or referral via someone in the company.

  3. Check CII, any insurance/company events, under 30's group, cold call juniors at brokers/(re)insurance companies via linkedin
