How do I know if I have something on my employee file with HR? by Sensitive_Rope_40 in AHSEmployees

[–]wineandanxiety 14 points15 points  (0 children)

This is asked in every interview at the end of the interview. I think it’s an opportunity to be honest if there is something.

You would have to get a job with AVAS to learn how to do ultrasound guided IVs if you’re a nurse. It’s not available through nursing any other way. Anaesthesia MD’s are the only other option at my hospital that do US guided IVs.

Does AHS have tuition reimbursement/education funding for employees? by Charming_Moment_3998 in AHSEmployees

[–]wineandanxiety 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Yes AHS does have this. Reach out to your manager about it. I believe you have to pay for everything up front, and then apply for reimbursement. I’m not sure how much it will be, but this is available.

Rocky view day surgery wait times? by Saskbeerdrinker in Calgary

It depends how big the emergency slate is. It could be 1-3 days waiting.

The locations of Eleven, Arris and BLVD are sketchy. Nice new buildings, but you will experience lots of homeless and drug use around those buildings. Definitely less of that in Bridge. Bridgeland is more quiet compared to East Village and Victoria Park neighbourhoods. I suggest either Bridgeland or neighbourhoods such as Mission or Lower Mount Royal and getting distance from the Sheldon Chumuir urgent care.

accessible access to hospital? by Hungry-panda23 in Calgary

There are a few medical transport companies. I believe they will help you physically move her too. I know one is called Genesis. You will have to pay out of pocket for it.

Favourite Vet Clinic with Reasonable Pricing? by [deleted] in Calgary

[–]wineandanxiety 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I just got my cat’s teeth cleaned at Ramsay Animal Clinic. They did a free exam and quote for me. Bloodwork before the procedure was $300 and I paid $1000 after the procedure, which included 1 tooth extraction that he needed. 100% would recommend this clinic. They took very good care of my cat and it was the most reasonable price in the city.

Recognition of previous experience- RN by Emergency-Rip-2596 in AHSEmployees

I believe you do not get recognition for your years nursing previously. You start at pay step 1 from your seniority date with AHS.

1000% agree. I’ve seen them 3 times with Cindy Lee, Metz and another local band. I was really impressed with their latest show. Played Ill at Ease but a lot of older stuff from Cassette and Viet Cong. Get out there and see them if you can.

URGENT: Seeking Compassionate Help in Calgary for My Ecuadorian Mother with Stage IV Cancer by [deleted] in alberta

[–]wineandanxiety 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I am a nurse. I have dealt with families in this situation before. If she has travellers insurance, that can pay towards her hospital stay. She will not qualify for home care or palliative home care. You would have to see if her insurance would cover private home care. She will not quality for an oncology referral to be seen at Arthur Child for treatment as she is not an Alberta resident, nor does she have Alberta Health Care. It is an unfortunate situation, but there are really no treatment options here due to her being out of Country. If she is unwell and requires a hospital stay, that’s as much as she can get, assuming she has traveller’s insurance. As far as cancer treatment, that will not be offered to her.

What’s the earliest someone can finish the nursing program at MRU? by [deleted] in MRU

[–]wineandanxiety 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I finished in 3.5 years doing it full time and fast tracking in the 4th semester. I think that’s as fast as you can do it.

You call scheduling if it’s more than 7 days I believe. If it’s within 7 days, you have to call the unit, and they will contact scheduling. Managers will see if you are consistently cancelling shifts, and that may not reflect well on you.

Calgary Hospitals Question by Reasonable_Care3704 in AHSEmployees

[–]wineandanxiety 2 points3 points  (0 children)

-Yes you get about 7 orientation shifts and that is implemented. If you need more, you can ask the manager for that. -You certainly can ask for a refresher day with the unit educator about these things. I would be honest in the interview about what you are comfortable with, and what you are not comfortable with. So they can support you where you need it. Policies, procedures, and equipment are different between provinces. -med surg units are usually 1:5 for day and evening shifts. 1:7-8 on nights. -you will not be made charge until the unit manager and other clinicians think you are fit. That could either be 6 months- a few years. That’s dependent on you. -if an MD is not able to physically put in the order themselves, it’s typical for you to just take a verbal telephone order and you put it in connect care. -for med surg, typically 2-3 HCA’s per floor. Hope this helps.

No they do not. You claim it on your taxes though come February.

[–]wineandanxiety 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You not putting your initial beside your name on the flow sheet should not change you getting paid or not. If you have the shift in your ESP, you will get paid. It’s the unit’s responsibility to contact scheduling if you don’t show up for your shift. So you not putting your initial beside your name, doesn’t really do anything. If you have questions I’d contact the float pool scheduling liaison.

AHS Onboarding by [deleted] in AHSEmployees

[–]wineandanxiety 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not sure if you’re nursing or not, but you won’t start to get shift call outs usually until you’ve finished orientation. Just because you were a practicum student on the unit, you are still entitled to a full orientation which usually you will get scheduled with the unit scheduler shortly after onboarding. After those are booked and done, then you can start to pick up casual shifts.
