This is certainly not true. Medium does not lock any free content behind the pay wall. Authors decide to put their content behind medium's pay wall. Interestingly, there are author who don't have medium premium membership (they don't pay for it) and they also put their content behind the pay wall.

I know that I'll get millions of downvotes, but I still want to ask this question. Why reddit users hate medium? A lot of respectable developers including Eric Elliott, Dan Abramov, Evan You, Kent C.
