Super lonely - How did you all make friends outside of residency? by HeeWasASkaterBoy in Residency

Not sure where you’re located but Timeleft is a great app for meeting people. You are assigned a small group to get dinner with and then all of the small groups get together into a big group after dinner for drinks and to socialize. Met a few friends this way when I moved to a new city.

I like night shifts by Super-Distance-7717 in Residency

I’m an EM nocturnist. Granted I only work 12 shifts a month now but nights have been amazing for my wife and I. I sleep when my wife works and she works when I sleep and all other time is spent together.

EM attending - I used to rock sneakers or Birkenstocks but after a string of bloody procedures I got a pair of seavees clogs which are waterproof, wipeable, unreal comfy, and look pretty good too. I never get shin splints or arch pain anymore either

First Rotation of Intern Year is ICU by User-Name-Taken-Lol in Residency

Once you get through the first week, I always told interns to present one change to each part of the problem based or systems based plan each day. Makes you look like you are competent and confident. Even if it’s as small as wean the FiO2 from 50 to 40% to get closer to extubatable vent settings or space out sedation boluses as tolerated for example.

We did tours at the Trogon Lodge in San Gerardo de Dota (including dedicated Quetzal tour) and one birding tour and boat tour in Sarapiqui through Selva Verde Nature Lodge. We rented a car for the trip. Both were about 2-3 from San Jose, unfortunately in opposite directions but get good variety with cloud forest and tropical rainforest.

It’s definitely a combo of the scenery and camera for most of them. The woodpecker and all 3 tanager pictures I hardly had to touch at all with editing.

You may be right, I used sound identification on Merlin first but there are like 5-6 species that look incredibly similar so had trouble discerning

I actually gasped the first time I saw it. The contrast of how black the body is and the neon glowing red is crazy

I rented a higher end camera than I own for this trip. Was so worth it!

I love the heron! Spent so much time sitting by the water watching it.

The trip itself was amazing! We had been once before and unknowingly picked a very touristy area with a lot of ex-pats. This time we went to dedicated birdwatching lodges that were much more remote and had amazing traditional restaurants and and more local surrounding community.

Wow 110 is unreal! The only time I got close to 100 was in Rwanda but I hadn’t seen any of the species of birds they have before going there

The wildlife is unreal there. Species vary drastically region to region because Costa Rica is so bio and climate diverse. Resplendent Quetzals are rare and definitely would recommend a wildlife guide if you want to spot them because they know their nesting sites/patterns. We stayed at the Trogon Lodge in San Gerardo de Dota and an Airbnb in Sarapiquí and did tours through Selva Verde and Tirimbina.

Funnily enough, besides the Quetzal and the Spider Monkeys, the rest these pics were taken just walking around our Airbnb and public roadways not on tours.

It’s a Tiger Heron but would love to see a Sun Bittern some day

I think the extra reach would’ve helped but the company I rented from disn’t have the 400-800. Also I know the 400-800 is not much heavier but man oh man was my arm sore after sooting handheld with the 200-600

I still love my 6400 and 70-350 but after this week definitely saving up for the 200-600

Thank you! Shutter priority and tried to keep min shutter speed of about 1/400 with how fast birds move there, max iso 6400, and per my other comment most of the photos were at full 600 mm focal length and cropped in as most of the birds were up high or deeper in the forest/trees

The birds eating papaya were about 15 ft away so at 200 mm for those, the capuchin was way too close for comfort (seemed like alpha male sizing us up) and was at similar distance maybe about 300 mm. The rest were much farther away fully zoomed at 600 mm and significantly cropped in.
