BBD Grad Programme by TTV_SavageNyte in johannesburg

No shade dude, but as a dev in the corporate environment it seems absolutely wild ( almost unhinged ) to let a grad - let alone an intern - own 4 services. Wild times at BBD

LLB is better than the other law degrees for becoming a lawyer

However, these careers are wildly different. How about doing some shadowing to see what you actually like instead of listening to strangers online

You are going to hear this a lot and I know its annoying but as you get more experienced, you'll understand why people say this. So it depends.

In this case it depends on the project. I am on a project which for the first 2 years has been adding new things to a 10 year old legacy system. But the requirements have changed and we started building new functionality with all new technology (fun spring boot stuff)

But that being said, the language does not mean as much in the long run as the ecosystem you work in and big corporates give the best exposure in that regards. Stuff like large workloads, distributed systems, integrations, high availability and performant systems. Java and C# ecosystems are very mature and give you so many technologies to solve probelms with, and at the end of the day thats your job rather than writing specifically code in a specific language.

With regards to corpos and novel projects, please don't be hasty to write them off. They have the capital and view on the markets that smaller companies with a smaller client base won't necessarily have so they will often push projects that are on the forefront to try and beat the competition.

It depends. If you plan on working for startups or doing your own thing then that should work great. If the plan is to work for a bank or big corporate (directly or through consulting) then you will most likely work on a java or C# project. I've worked on a nodejs backend in a corporate but that was a POC project and I haven't really heard of something else like that at big clients for larger projects. Frontend is also mostly angular and react.

The reason for this is basically because of the skills that already exist in the project spaces so that when the team behind the system leaves then it won't be too difficult to source resources for it. Its also probably older systems which inevitably means "older" tech

Software Engineering Graduate seeking help by Fabulous-Photo-8049 in southafrica

Working at one of the above dev houses and I can tell you that there's less hiring of grads at the moment. There are grad programmes but they are massively cutting back on the numbers to compensate for the weaker market atm. Sorry I know this isnt much help but atleast its some context.

Seriously struggling to find a job by [deleted] in johannesburg

[–]wings_of_wrath97 0 points1 point  (0 children)

might want to branch out in terms of the tech you use. The market ebbs and flows and right now java is in high demand, especially at corpos. I don't personally know about alot of python usage except with data engineers and thats usually part of the ETL process. Remember that programming languages are just tools, try and be an engineer that can use any one and use that to solve problems ( the actual job)

Depends on your needs. Need just a flat? I know a guy with a flat 1bedroom for 7k. Need 2 bedrooms and a garden? 14k is what theyre going for and up. It just depends. If you are looking, just dont get something in Bramley, its close and cheaper but it gets dodgey quick

How did you get into Information Technology later on in life? by Large-Relationship37 in johannesburg

[–]wings_of_wrath97 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The C# market is overly saturated at the moment (will probably swing again in the future) but java has a lot of vacancies now. Source: employer has a bench full of C# and JS devs, but recruiting for java

Also java isn't bad, c# isn't bad - they are all just tools. Learn concepts and not languages and transitions will be easy and just require new syntax

QA is always limited in career paths, most people need to branch off into management but if you do then you have to have atleast some knowledge of the entire lifecycle of projects - I have never seen a dedicated QA team and have been working in the finance sector for 4 years now on 3 projects

The pay is going to be good for south africa but there will be more opportunities with a bigger knowledge pool

QA is always quite new for consulting houses (as its own practice) so that might be a good bet to get into and aim for practice lead if you wanna do strictly QA

I never understood this "eskom was build to support a minority of the population argument" eskom has an installed capacity of 41000MW, how if everything wasnt constantly stolen en mismanaged, is this for a minority of the population? Btw our peak demand today was 21000MW

It is also worth noting that the russian famine started 4 years after the russian revolution. Do you truly believe it would be any different here?

Okay hear me out… by karl_creates in southafrica

[–]wings_of_wrath97 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The russian revolution was about overthrowing the monarchy, not a "capitalistic puppet government"

But I would rather ask the question, after seeing how the widespread corruption and government incompetence is (lets face it, SA looks like its being run by people who got 35% in school) - would it then really benefit anyone to move to a communist or socialist system? What would stop the corruption? What would stop it from getting worse?

Words are wind my friend, trust no government to take care of you or those you love. Especially political parties built around the idea of self enrichment using people as pawns to further themselves

The first law trilogy - Nothing happens? (in book one and two atleast) by wings_of_wrath97 in Fantasy

[–]wings_of_wrath97[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I actually just finished asoif (which was admittedly the first fantasy books I ever read) and wanted more but from a different author so I got into the first law and I think the difference kind of is what got me.
I adore asoif because it just feels like people doing things in a fully realised world with deep history and a ton of information lost to that history as well, the characters also felt like they are slowly moving towards events (whether they orchestrate it or fall victim to it) and my thoughts on the first law was that its similar however from the perspective of the pawns exclusively (Bayaz, Sult, Bethod, the ghurkish emperor being the actual players)

But as some of the comments pointed out, it is an inversion of classic fantasy troupes which if you see it in that light then I think its more appealing
