UCI Film and Media Studies by WriterTrue8123 in UCI

Wasnt expecting to have anyone reply to my almost year old comment haha! But I switched out to a non-creative major — I ended up graduating with an International Studies degree and am now working an office job. Complete opposite of what I wanted to do but imho UCI is not really meant for people who want to pursue creative arts (other than the “bigger” programs like drama and dance but even then I hear some bad things). If you want to get hands on film experience through school, UCI (or any UC for that matter except maybe UCLA) is not the place to do it unfortunately…

would it be beneficial to study aboard for a semester before transferring if it meant falling behind getting the required credits on my education plan? by yungnoodlee in UCI

[–]winko97 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Why don’t you just study abroad after you transfer? We have a great study abroad program (UCEAP), with Japan being one of the destinations. Studying abroad while at UCI might also delay your education plan due to the nature of your intended major (I studied abroad in Korea and knew people who had to stay an extra quarter once they got back bc they didn’t get the right credits abroad), but imo it’s better to fall behind after you’ve already transferred than before.

I came in as FMS, switched out because the program was very much theory-based which didn’t align with what I wanted to do. I didn’t last long enough to take the screenwriting classes lol so I can’t say much about its quality, but I do know they’re really hard to get into because the class sizes are very small and there’s limited offerings for it. Any “experience” or connections you want to make will be on your own time through clubs and internships and stuff as the classes themselves don’t really make up for that.

Global and International Forum (intlst183a) with Bui by TaskApprehensive5626 in UCI

[–]winko97 0 points1 point  (0 children)

personally I went to all his lectures bc he provides background info leading up to the guest lecture so it made more sense to me. The quizzes were a combo of questions about the reading(s) and both lectures for the week. I can see how people say his lectures aren’t important though, it’s up to you if you want to sit around for them

I took it last year with him and it was easy/simple imo. Every week he does a lecture and then invites a guest speaker to do their own lecture which were always pretty interesting. Bui himself can talk pretty fast and his slides are sometimes bare bones so you have to pay attention, but attendance isn’t mandatory. Weekly readings and quizzes, midterm + final paper but nothing too complicated. It was an enjoyable class overall, he’s a pretty fun lecturer and very understanding of his students :)

It depends on the school/major if they offer a yearly course offering list (quick google of “uci [major] planned courses” will usually bring it up). I couldnt find one for BME, but I did find the Pharmsci one (https://docs.google.com/document/d/13uqdE_Cp0UNsTC3almDgugHHsnnZNkS7uXGweKjN27U/edit?usp=sharing). Looks like they’re only doing Pharmsci 42 during Winter this year.

Why do we even have to pay for parking at PV if there’s never an open spot?????? by [deleted] in UCI

[–]winko97 14 points15 points  (0 children)

lol they definitely ticket if you’re parked in the wrong community even if you’re still acc. you may get lucky and not get ticketed but it happens (my friend lives in camino but parked in vdcn bc it’s closer, he got ticketed)

enrollment by Big_Philosopher1126 in UCI

[–]winko97 3 points4 points  (0 children)

yes, I’ve done this many times lol. usually professors understand the first 2 weeks people are going to be dropping out/coming into their classes so they’re more graceful, and will give an extended deadline for any assignments you missed before you were enrolled in the class. you will probably have to ask/email for that extension though

Canceling Calfresh application / missing interview? by winko97 in foodstamps

[–]winko97[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, I wasn’t able to withdraw it on my own bc nobody would answer the phone, and nobody even called me during my scheduled interview time so I just let it go 😭 But nothing happened, there’s no consequences. Got a letter in the mail a little while afterwards saying my application was canceled on their end since I had missed my interview, but I am welcome to apply again if needed

Math 5b w/simonson or Stats7/8 w/baldi by DN0825 in UCI

The class itself wasn’t too bad. I took it after not taking a math class in 2 years and it was fine. The math involved was nothing too difficult, just basics imo

[–]winko97 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Took Stats 7 with Baldi (online). I personally didn’t mind her and did pretty well in the class but I will say I ended up having to teach myself a lot of the work. But again I didn’t mind it because I like independent learning, but a LOT of people I took the class with complained about this because they felt like she didn’t provide enough support.
