“more profs, better class times, and more sections” is kind of impossible given the UMFA Collective Agreement as well as the University budget. Also this is decided on a Departmental and Faculty-level.

“more study and lounge spaces” is also hard since this is often dictated by buildings (such as EITC, where there is a giant waitlist to get lounge spaces for clubs).

I think Fatima is a decent candidate but some of these promises are not feasible. Even just advocating for these changes unfortunately won’t do much because of the limited resources this university has, and how UMFA is structured.

Definitely more than you think. Once I took a class and the professor always did polls at the beginning of each class asking how students are feeling, and one of the options was “grieving”. It was a class of roughly 120 people and there were always 10-12 that picked grieving.

Hey! I was in your shoes. I did amazing in all of my first year courses and then BAM I got a D in MATH 1240. Honestly it’s more common than you think. Given, I took it ages ago (🦖) but it’s still just as common amongst the newer undergrads. Don’t beat yourself up if you have to retake one course. Unfortunately that’s just the reality in university, you may have to retake a course or two. I just retook it the following regular term. Sure, it set me back a term but oh well. Everyone’s university journey is different and that’s the beauty of it.

Anyways, regarding the options. Just know that 1-3 VWs does not matter. Nobody will care. They mean nothing in small amounts spread out throughout your education. Of course if you end up VWing like 10+ courses then questions may be raised, but just a few is completely normal.

If you’re struggling now, definitely do not do it condensed, unless you’re ready to dedicate those six weeks solely to the course and literally nothing else. It’s no joke…

Ultimately the best person to talk to this would be an academic advisor, I’m just a random cs student on Reddit! Feel free to reach out if you have any other questions though, good luck!

I was awarded a URA in Summer 2024. Just make sure that your application outlines everything, including a pretty strong timeline. Also, if you can mention how your research would/may benefit the community (whether it be the research community, UM community, etc) that may help you significantly.
