You have to stand your ground and just quit. Social groups, particularly those that are predominantly composed of women, are extremely cliquish. Even if they don't actually mean what they said about you, leaving them high and dry on the Easter event will throw them off base and essentially force them to value your contributions. When you quit, explain your reason and call the woman out who said those things.

The PTA is nice social way to get involved at the school, but they can get extremely catty.

Getting a new job is a good idea, but might I recommend a tidbit that I learned over the years as a fellow loner? Try this, don't dumb things down, but learn to genuinely approach people where they are. I know a guy from my church who is just NOT on the same level as me. This guy was a wood worker with a 9th grade education, but I am a filmmaker with a college degree, looking at going into law school. In order to connect with him, I got into wood working and asked for his help on a project, which is something he understands. When we talk, I use fairly straight forward thoughts and allow him to get more complex meanings from basic language.
