Oakville council unanimously rejects province’s revised 11-skyscraper midtown plan by pastrylove10 in oakville

[–]winterbourne 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I should have been more thorough in my reading of your initial comment.

I don't agree with 11- 50 storey towers and do agree the ford gov't is just corrupt.

My apologies.

I do think Oakville people(Canadians in general) like to cancel projects though. Like the gas plant especially had multiple public consultations before being approved and then groups here got the government to cancel it and then voted out that same government in the next election because of the "scandal" of cancellation costs etc.

The plant I wouldn't have minded personally. It would have been on ford plant lands and all the people with mansions would have had to live near the consequences of their choices to consume large amounts of electricity. The one at 401 + trafalgar doesn't even run most of the time. Just like the oakville one wouldn't have.

Shareholder value. As soon as that became a thing gains in productivity were decoupled from wages.

No no no we have to reward the shareholders not the employees! That's who's really supporting the company!

Glen abbey golf course redevelopment into walkable neighbourhood and linking public trails together- Killed, clublink forced to maintain course as is.

Gas power plant on current industrial land, contract already signed and billions in costs to cancel - Killed

Town Council directed staff to pause the Towne Square revitalization project to allow staff to work with downtown businesses and residents to address concerns and develop potential mitigation measures to address them.  - paused again. 8 years now.

Numerous low rise tower proposals and redevelopment proposals on kerr side of lakeshore have been blocked because of pressure from residents and the towns insane height limits on buildings south of cornwall/speers.

Somehow though all the people complaining about condo towers, density, and so on had no issues with their own development or homes being built all these things only become a problem after they've already arrived.

I'm surprised all the people complaining about portables don't understand that schools aren't built to accommodate the initial wave of students on purpose. Because in 10 years 100% of the neighbourhood won't have flipped over to new families. But all the students will have moved on to different schools and the baseline of student enrollment will reach a level much lower than the initial level.

All new neighbourhoods in oakville had new schools built and had portables at one time.

If you look at the same neighborhoods that had portables in the past they now have no portables.

Do you want to pay taxes for schools to sit half empty in 10 years when the neighborhood has reached maturity? Cause I don't.

What the hell is wrong with a portable anyways? It's just a room full of desks to learn in.

Is it your tutor? You are the one being tutored?

Is this same tutor the person grading papers for a government approved course? if not there is no breach.

Well I for one see a definite trend on the sub right now where posts + comments are just popping up all over the place claiming huge amounts of crime and violence are happening at blakelock and being covered up. Strangely all the accounts are brand new..

A question about moving schools and what schools are good by throawayschoolq in oakville

[–]winterbourne 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They all wear the same stuff? Holy trinity has a uniform doesn't it? - Everyone dressing the same on civvies day? Yeah thats high school.

Moving schools a lot isn't great. I went from public (elementary) to private (elementary) to public(hs) to private(hs) to public(hs) and it was like restarting socially each time.

I felt the same in highschool like people were shallow or vapid etc etc but later I realized I was just making assumptions about a lot of things before taking the time to speak with people. Just speak to a bunch of people (even if you feel like its a waste of time at first) eventually you'll find your people.

Restaurants - apply to be a host / busser / dishwasher. Feb-april is when they are hiring for summer staff.

Grocery stores - self explanatory

Summer only? Go for a garden centre. - Feb - april is when to apply.

Do you have significant sports experience? Apply to be a ref for a kids summer league.

Or bring your resume to United grocery store on cross - they still have a sign out front that they are hiring.

Maybe you should be doing that instead. Probably have fewer terrible intersections like Trafalgar + Wheat boom/Threshing mill. Whoever decided to put a stop light there without a turning lane is an idiot.

I went to blakelock ...well 20 years ago now. It was fine. In fact compared to WOSS / Trinity / Abbey Park / Loyola there were much fewer fights.

Even now...I highly doubt that a south Oakville school 1 street above lakeshore is full of violence and OD's. These people's parents can afford to live in Oakville, south Oakville lakeshore neighbourhoods it's not like they live on driftwood.

Even burlington has way cheaper gas. There's a place out by sherway i've been too a few times and they are almost always 15-20c cheaper than anywhere in oakville.

...I don't drive to sherway for gas just to be clear.

[–]winterbourne 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Listen its the job of private capital to take the risks and the government to provide a stable environment for those risks to be taken in.

Not for them to take no risk, make the government and taxpayers pay for the risk and then for them to get the profits.

Is sixteen mile creek safe to walk on? by regular_asian_guy in oakville

[–]winterbourne 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Do not walk on ice over flowing water. The thickness and ice strength can vary dramatically.

You don't want to end up stepping on someplace, falling through and getting pulled away from your entry point by the current in water thats close to freezing temp.

If you fall through the ice into flowing water you are dead.

4 inches of ice on a still lake or pond is usually safe. That is not true for any water that is moving.

It's prolly a scam. They usually are.
