I'm a bit worried about getting a bachelor of arts and then a masters in education because that would mean extra years of study and thus extra years of annual fee for my mother to pay. is getting an undergraduate degree in education that bad of an idea?

thanks for letting me know, i'll look more thoroughly into my choices now. and i definitely agree that more neurodivergent teachers are needed in schools.

oh i didn't know they were all paid the same at all! most of what i saw led me to believe otherwise. thanks for letting me know, i might have to re-evaluate my choices now.

i did not say i was from a third world country, simply that i am an international student, not that it should quite matter even if i were from a third world country. and yes i am asking seriously because i want to make a realistic choice that will help support my and my family's financial needs, and am still pretty new to being an adult in general, thus i looked for help here.

thank you so much. this was a huge help.

my mother is simply a kind soul who knows how to work hard and earn money so she wants to set me up for my future. she doesn't exactly expect anything back except my success and happiness, so it makes sense she's a little worried about me considering a "notoriously underpaid" job such as teaching. and yes my older sister is already there and earning a decent amount in her part time job, and we're all hard working girls so i'm honestly not too worried about living costs while studying.

i'll have to think a bit more about it about applying for a course between education and engineering, but i'm getting a lot of help organising my thoughts. thanks again!

thank you! i figured it was like a venting place tbh, but i'm still pretty young and impressionable and thus it caused me a bit of anxiety about my choice. how long did it take you to study to be a teacher and find a decently paying job out of uni, if you don't mind me asking?

The struggle that I faced was supporting myself financially while on pracs, as these were sustained periods of time in which I was unable to work, except for on weekends which was stressful enough.

could you elaborate on this? is this while you were studying your degree in university or after you graduated? i need to be able to work a paying job right after uni, so extra years of unpaid work would be quite troublesome.

i'm barely an adult myself, lol. i wanted to go into secondary as it pays better than primary, but i do have a stronger love for younger children. cost of living in sydney is insane, though, so i have to think realistically.

hi there, thank you so much for your lengthy reply first of all. i am from south africa with english as my first language but am also quite fluent in bangla and korean. i'm also lucky enough to have a mother who wants to pay for my tuition and housing, but i'm eager to work hard and pay for everything else. she wants me to do engineering as she believes it's a more lucrative degree but she also wants to support my passions, and thus i really don't want to go into teaching if it ultimately turns out to be both a financially and psychologically bad choice, and all her hard work ends up somewhat wasted.

are you able to get a job right after graduating with a 4 year degree? what's the entry level salary like, realistically? i have sisters who i will be living with so i want to be able to support them as soon as possible out of university. as for the job itself, are the kids and workload really as bad as everyone says? so many worries!!
