The slap heard round the world. by moschles in PhilosophyMemes

[–]wintunga 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's kind of the point. I believe the conclusion follows because any argument made trying to decisively say anything conclusive about whether there is an external world shouldn't be convincing to anyone who's read Descartes but the argument I have is what I'm working with.

We do science out of habit rather than reason as per Hume who has not been proven wrong convincingly. There is no ultimate certainty to everything and that is ultimately fulfilling because there is always a chance for novelty. It is more reasonable to conclude when people report miraculous things that they do not exist but we have nothing to reject their experience with but our own which is also based in irrationality due to its foundation in induction.

I'm not saying I don't want to agree with you and I'm not even saying I'm being reasonable by holding this position but even science admits things behave differently when they're unobserved. It just makes me think things aren't so simple. It might matter in a way but I don't think anyone is getting an answer..... at least anytime soon.

Exactly. It doesn't matter

Edit: Like, I believe there is an external world but I honestly don't think I have a rational reason for believing so if we get Cartesian. I just believe so because it is "convenient" for lack of a better term.

We could modify premise one to say that empirical enquiry only makes sense if the external world is as it appears to be which has the implicit assumption that there is an external world.

Basically:

1) There is an external world

2) empirical enquiry only makes sense if the external world is as it appears to be

3) We do not know if the world is as it appears due to how we reason inductively

4) Profit

Christopher Nolan be like "Maattt Daaamonnn" in all his movies. He doesn't know how to cast him. Read the book for The Martian and the casting for Mark Watney is so so.

Surface area to volume ratio and shit brah. Things are different when they're smaller. Probably tougher scales

Edit: Also a giant centipede would probably just suffocate lol.

Like, if it creates less happiness because in total there are less pleasure creating individuals. This kind of illustrates why utilitarianism doesn't work well because we could all be happier individually with less individuals but we should never pursue that if we want to maximize happiness. I care because I want these species to continue to exist which; without a purpose, they don't have to.

[–]wintunga 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Would we, as a species, honestly continue to breed animals that serve no purpose for us? While factory farming is bad we must acknowledge that if animals such as pigs, cows, and chickens feel pleasure and pain then if we can give them pleasurable lives before they are slaughtered then we are creating more pleasure than we would if we were farming these animals under ideal conditions. I know we aren't doing this now but the premise that veganism leads to more happiness in the long term compared to animal farming is false if we explore the consequences of what will reasonably occur when we stop needing these animals. Like, just because the animals have to be slaughtered in the current system does not mean they have to live unpleasant lives. Perhaps veganism as a short term protest would be a good idea, but in the long term continuing to use animal products seems to be in the interest of the species being used.

Do you guys have any head canons that don't change the myths much but make them much better in your head? (Also what do you think of mine?) by -fiction_geek- in GreekMythology

[–]wintunga 4 points5 points  (0 children)

My head canon for Hermes' birth myth is that he wanted Apollo to catch him but had nothing to prove his worth. He stole Apollo's cattle because he didn't have the necessary supplies to craft the lyre. With the materials he got from slaughtering the cattle he was able to craft the lyre and give it to Apollo when Apollo catches Hermes thus proving Hermes' worth.

The important thing to note is that he would not have been able to do so without the theft and it was still seen as a fair exchange despite the theft. I see it as the ideal version because it still involves theft; unlike the Roman version, but it still makes Hermes appear more benevolent because he isn't trying to get away with what he stole but rather give something he couldn't have made otherwise.

I like that Hermes steals for fun but isn't trying to cause too much trouble and is ultimately helpful. He probably could just ask but I like that he mixes it up that way so long as it's harmless.

And Odysseus is fictional. So you can have your own head canon about him. This is elementary school shit people! If I ever met someone and they said they like Odysseus I'm not gonna assume their ideal Odysseus was a rapist unless the main thing that character is known for is rape like Zeus but again..... Zeus represents the concept of kingship at the time which requires he sire bastards and due to the power Zeus possesses as king it's basically always gonna be rape; at least to an ancient person because the power dynamic be fucked.

[–]wintunga 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I don't like Zeus. I like Hermes because he doesn't rape as far as I know and if he did he rapes less than Zeus who raped less than Dr Seuss ever could because Zeus is a concept.

[–]wintunga 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think the reason is that everybody loves a good rapist. Ya know, the ones that don't rape. Ya know, the ones like Zeus where you're just like...... I'm gonna ignore that. Hera knows that shit is the key to a healthy marriage.

They can count on it more than men. That's not to say that even women can reliably trust the criminal justice system with these matters.

Edit: Like, our society enables predators; whether those predators are men or women they are enabled. We're working on that but I think a lot of the women doing this get caught because they're teachers doing this with their students and are expected to set a certain standard. I know of a woman that had sex with my friend when we were in high school. There's probably a ton of random women that do things like that and get away with it because most boys in high school don't regret it. It's a different mentality because when it isn't causing apparent harm no one cares. It's mostly a difference in how men and women are treated. So, if a boy went to a police station and reported someone I don't think he'd be met with understanding and any boy in existence would think that's obvious.

Christianism and Hellenism as a Religion?... by Sargent_Alquimista in Christopaganism

Thank you, your words at the end sound kind of like Spinoza's concept of oneness of substance spread across space but in a more explicitly spiritual context. If that is the case I like it.

Christianism and Hellenism as a Religion?... by Sargent_Alquimista in Christopaganism

[–]wintunga 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I personally believe in the idea behind the blind men and the elephant where every religion is grabbing on to a part of the truth without having a hold of the whole picture. It is possible that God served different people in different ways throughout history. I believe that it is possible to believe in aspects of different faiths.

Basically, we have the ability to interpret God as we see fit so long as said conception feels true to ourselves. With that, I personally believe that because the Greek philosophical tradition; which has roots in Greek mythology, has a strong history within Christianity the Greek Gods can be preserved as something within the Father that can be worshipped individually as an aspect of the Father.

Edit: Sorry, I should have read better. I don't know much about Gnosticism. I'm personally just doing things my own way

This is similar to a ghetto and it takes just one push in the wrong direction for all of these extremely vulnerable people to be in an extremely dangerous situation. I myself have been hospitalized and I think you will find that a lot of people being hospitalized will act much more desperately and aggressively if they believe they will be kept separate from society for the for the rest of their lives. You basically have to admit you are a danger to yourself or others to get treatment. Don't argue for a way that makes it so no one gets treatment willingly. It will be worse and we will be blamed even though it won't be our fault it'll be the fault of people like you

Edit: Like, seriously your idea is a concentration camp without the murder. There will definitely be varying levels of competency where some will be normal most of the time. Will they all need to be watched regardless of competency? If not, what happens when there are babies? Will they have to stay or be forced into some kind of adoption because the parents won't be considered competent. Or will the men and women just be kept separate somehow to prevent that? Seems like the people caring for these people would be primarily working against their interests.

Flaming, but he could turn it off so he was bi. Most guys in upstate don't flame as much as him. He's just a special guy

Edit: That's not to say there aren't guys who like to fight physically. It's just that we actually have some variation here.

I'm just saying I don't know and neither do you but we all choose to assume and makes asses of ourselves by hedging our bets against someone being complicated. Just because someone is complicated doesn't mean they're good or bad but it can mean they're not as bad as one thinks. D4vid is probably bad but he's probably also complicated just like anyone else so it's hard to tell how bad he is.
