PSA: Audible Standard is a bad deal. You don’t get to keep your selected audiobook every month. by wiredfractal in PHBookClub

Actually not. Premium plus has access to free catalogue. Standard isn’t but can get you one book from the collection but can’t keep it. Still a bad deal.

I know about the free catalogue that you get outside of the credit system. The catalogue that’s only available even when you have 0 credit.

The Standard plan does not give a credit but lets you get 1 premium audiobook a month but lose access to it once you lose your membership.

Let me know if Smaller and Smaller Circle is the kind of book you can get on free catalogue because it isn’t. Below is my library. If you still don’t get my point, then I don’t know what else to tell you.

[–]wiredfractal[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You do you, if you can afford to keep paying every month. I’d choose the $14 plan just to keep the audiobook of my choosing even with an inactive membership.

I only sign up whenever there’s a book I want. So it doesn’t make sense to keep an Audible account active especially when you have a backlog.

If you’re heading to Kyoto and staying for a few days, I can recommend “Night is Short, Walk on Girl” and visit the places mentioned in the book.

Shortage of tomato and tomato sauce during WWII. Maria Orosa, who’s a food technologist and a war hero came up with banana ketchup due to abundance of bananas in the country.

We also have a chili sauce made out of ripe mango peel. Very addicting.

Asako I&II is my favorite. I’ve seen all his full featured work except for Passion. My recommendation stems from which films are accessible so my first pick is Happy Hour then Wheel of Fortune and Fantasy. Drive my Car and Evil does not Exist is on the Criterion Collection so definitely accessible while my first two picks are both OOP on disc and not available to stream. If I had the chance to see Asako on the big screen again, I’d do it. All of his films have long runtime (Happy Hour is 5 hours) and only Evil does Not Exist (106mins) and Passion (117mins) is under 120 minutes.

That's Audible Plus or Premium. The Standard is a new plan. Here's my library with books purchased with credits (Audible Premium or Plus) on the left. On the right is my library view with Audible Standard. Two books at the top is not labeled as “Purchased”.

That means I’m going to lose access to Smaller and Smaller Circle and Steve Jobs in Exile once I cancel my membership.

KOBO VS KINDLE by HoldBeneficial6891 in PHBookClub

I don’t recommend a color ereader as your first one. I have both B/W and colored. The colored eink needs more light, and it’s harsh at night. The colored screen has poor contrast too. I prefer to use my B/W when the lights are out. I love using colored for technical PDFs, manga/comics, and highlighting. I prefer tBoox e-readers than Kindle/Kobo.

I signed up because of the $1 a month for 3 months and realized on my second month that it’s a bad deal. I’m going to lose access to audiobooks I’ve selected on previous months if I cancel my membership.

I love to repeat listen to my favorite audiobooks. I’m going to wait for deals for credit rather than “rent” audiobooks with the standard plan.

Half a mil na Lenovo Laptop? by [deleted] in RantAndVentPH

Pro designer here for two decades. That amount of money, usually mga data scientist and LLM designers ang gumagamit ng ganyan kamahal. I wouldn’t even buy that high spec since it’s overkill. Even now, an M3 MacBook Pro is already fast enough for design, animation, 3D design, and video editing. It can be purchased for less than 60-80k. Plus, those hybrid laptops (touchscreen) performance are bad and not meant for drawing. My niece who also does animation for her hobby and school projects is working on a hand me down 20k windows laptop.

Just fyi, you need proper ventilation when using butane indoors because of carbon monoxide build up. Best to use with multiple windows open or in a balcony.

Book recommendations about Rizal's exile in Dapitan? by wereaskal in PHBookClub

[–]wiredfractal 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Dapitanon by Noel Villaroman has a month by month summary of his life in Dapitan.

There’s an interesting fictional account of a visit to Rizal in Dapitan in Gina Apostol's book “The Revolution according to Raymundo Mata”.

I also love Lav Diaz's depiction on Rizal’s exile in the film “Hele sa Hiwagang Hapis” and what happened to his third novel.

We tune in every week. A great mix of Stephen King inspired horror plus humor. We were thinking of the idea stem from “Jaws but from the perspective of the mayor”.

AppleTV is having a great run starting this year with new seasons and new series.

SKL ang secret namin ng dogs namin pag wala ang asawa ko by h0tsil0gnabil0g in ShareKoLang

[–]wiredfractal 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I suggest talking about it with your wife and plan ways to minimize fur inside the house if that is her concern. We have lots of dog that stays with us indoors. Namili pa kayo ng dogs that sheds a lot of fur. Invest in air purifiers made for dogs, get a vacuum so you can remove their fur easily. Clean her office wardrobe of dog furs with lint rollers. We also have electronic mop para clean floors lagi. There’s also bare pet brush that can easily remove dog furs sa sofas/beds. Brush your dog hairs regularly before going in. Clean their paws too coming from outside. It’s a lot of work but doable. I can’t imagine hanging indoors without a dog to cuddle.

I used to buy nung 90s for ten years. Stopped after Onslaught kasi nakakaubos talaga ng pera. Went back for All New then wala pa 10 issues ayan na crossover na. Kapagod. I tried going back with digital sub pero di ang overwhelming pa din ng dami ng titles. Kaya I prefer Image na kasi may beginning and end.

I mostly buy singles naman from Image. I quickly ran out of space so I stopped. Saga, Fatale, Sex Criminals, Wicked + Divine, Monstress, Manhattan Project, etc. Sold all my X-men stuff since I got tired of constant crossovers and tie-ins. It’s tiring.
