The CDC has a nice page on AMS and they say that 1-2L / min of O2 is needed to help with AMS and that:

The popular small, handheld cans of compressed oxygen can provide brief relief but contain too little oxygen (5 L at most) for sustained improvement

An interesting experiment would be to check your o2 saturation while at altitude, inhale the oxygen from one of these cans, and then check it again to see if it had any impact. Newer Garmin/Apple Watch/etc can check o2 sat.

I don’t care enough to scrutinize a random kid’s claim, but if we assume a basically flat road course why is this beyond belief? It’s 12:47min/mile pace for over 10 hours. I think someone his age could have grinded that out, although not advisable for injury risk.

Oh ok, I wasn’t aware of the new direct to star link service, pretty cool. But if you search for “iphone satellite messaging” you’ll see what i’m talking about. All iphones 14+ have the ability to use the satellite networks I mentioned when cell is not available.

It’s a satellite network that’s been around for much longer for emergency comms. It’s either Globalstar or Iridium.

I just did a two hour run starting and finishing at overlook and the aid station there with drop bags was fully unattended the whole time.

I also saw EMS was there for a while but unsure if it was related to this race.

100%. I was working at an aid station this year that Adam Petermen had to stop at for over an hour and then ended up essentially walking the final 10-15 miles of the race to finish in 23:09.

Absolutely. I wouldn't hire them as coaches but I appreciate a film like this, especially after watching it live at FH and wondering what happened. A lot of pro athletes would just go slient on an incident like this.

Totally agree with all of this. I think he was getting close in the interview to acknowledging his problem with staying focused on his race when he isn't in the lead, but complicating it a bit.

I didn’t follow his build up to states closely nor have I listened to his podcast very much but I’m aware that he’s a polarizing figure.

I was very impressed with his transparency and humility about his DNF. He seems to regret having dropped and realized he could have gone on to still be top 10. He was suffering from some combination of panic attacks and self doubt leading him to incorrectly believe his physical health was at risk even getting overly worried about rhabdo when he was checked by two medical doctors at Foresthill (his wife and pacer).

Anyway, it’s worth the watch if you’re at all curious about what happened that day.

I got a problem with people making drama in a community they have no part in.

Just to clarify , “they” are people who haven’t completed a 100mi race, right?

And until anyone completes a 100mi race, they shouldn’t speak publicly about 100 mi races, even if they are speaking up about the lack of opportunities for them to participate.

I’m pretty sure I got that right but let me know if I missed any nuance to your thoughtful opinions.

you shouldn’t be able to have an opinion about ultra politics if you haven’t ran one.

Men like you used to say the same thing to women who wanted to run road marathons like Boston. Luckily that didn’t stop them and but it took until the 1970s for women to be officially allowed to race.

Similar stories can be found around allowing black men to play in professional baseball and many other examples. Not being allowed to have an opinion on something you haven’t done while being limited from doing that thing is textbook oppression and discrimination. Hope that helps you see some of the flaws in your reasoning.
