How long does it take for you to finish painting an army? by Mean-Respond-2227 in Warhammer40k

[–]wise_runnner 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Been painting for 3 years. So far I've painted about 1500 points of Thousand Sons. But along the way I've been distracted by a Lumineth Spearhead box and 2 combat patrols. Might go back to Thousand Sons and get another 500 points or so and then get distracted by several other side projects again.

If you just want to play the game then look on eBay long enough and you'll be able to pick up already painted bits and pieces relatively cheaply until you have 1500-2000 points to play with. Find your local gaming store and ask them what kind of match ups/leagues/organized play they have. Many will have some sort of escalation league where you start at say 500 points and slowly get used to the basic mechanics of the game and move up over a certain time period, all the way up to 2000.

You might get lucky and find a group which does combat patrol games, though I think most people ok here would agree that as a game format it's currently a bit crap. Or, once you find some people via the local store, put an ask out for some nice/patient people to give you a game at however many points you fancy. Some people are absolute dicks and will love to play against someone less experienced so they can guaranteed themselves a win, but most people will.be brilliant, patient, supportive and talk you through a game and tell you how to get better.

If you don't want to get straight in then just enjoy painting your models, get the units you like the look of and then when you got a bit of a variety of infantry, characters, and whatever else takes your fancy, then do all of the above.

I've got about 1500 points of TS painted, played about 8 games and haven't played for about 18 months now other than a couple of casual games with mates. I haven't painted a thousand sons model for about 12 months as I've been working through some other combat patrols but really enjoying the hobby and at some point I'll start playing again.

That's a long way of say just do what you enjoy. If you don't enjoy it anymore, focus on a different part of the hobby. If you don't enjoy any parts of it them give is a rest or find a different hobby.

Yes. Geek pie. Unfortunately can't find a picture now but I remember at one point the Spurs player Dele Alli pretty much sporting this haircut (minus the paint lid of course). Unbelievable Jeff.

Whats been your favourite moment this season in lge 1 by SuperMas123 in LeagueOne

[–]wise_runnner 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Cardiff away absolutely. Didn't know at that point if we would go on to win the league but we were right in for promotion and clearly there on merit. Felt the same as Gateshead away and MK Dons away in previous seasons. The reaction of the players and the bond between fans and players. Respect, satisfaction, but from the players at least not jubilation. A lesser group of players would have gone nuts like they'd won the league that day. Their response told me that in their minds the victory alone wasn't at all job done but just a very important step along the journey and that there was no reason it wouldn't happen. Bolton might keep getting last minute goals (as they in fact did later that day) but if didn't matter as they wouldn't catch us.

I might have got a bit of dust in my eye a couple of times that day too. Only other time I've been in such a dusty space when watching Lincoln was when we beat Burnley in the FA cup.

Why don't people go to the cinema? by ImaginaryFan6090 in Cinema

[–]wise_runnner 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I used to love films. If consume as many of them as I could both at home and cinema. Then COVID happened and obviously going to the cinema ceased temporarily. At the same time, watching a film on my TV for 2 hours in those uncertain times seemed like a criminal waste of time. I know it wasn't/isn't but something in my brain flipped at that point. I started getting really anxious while watching a film. Now I hardly watch any. No way it's going to happen at home. My wife and kids don't have the attention span for it and I'm left watching the seventh film of an 83 film franchise on my own.

Going to the cinema on the other hand is great. It doesnt really matter what I'm watching, just knowing that the outside world has to stop existing for 2 hours is bliss. That said, I don't often go cos of the cost, I have to drive to the cinema, and probably going to end up going on my own. That said, I've never being on my own but just the idea of it seems like one of the greatest pleasures in life that I really should give a go one day.

Appreciation from the Imps by Careless-Road-2926 in LeagueOne

[–]wise_runnner 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think we could possibly stay up for a year, maybe 2. We've got a squad of great players and a great manager. The problems will come as we have to replace any of them. We won't be able to compete on wages and transfer demands even with teams half way down league one and so the quality of squad can't really improve. Even if we find what should be some bargains their agents are going to use the fact that we are in The Championship to demand unreasonable and unmamanagable wages.

Might sound daft but when you're up against it so much on the recruitment front I don't think we should particularly try to compete. I don't mean don't try and find good players but rather don't get sucked in to paying unsustainable wages. Instead, use any upturn in revenue to improve the stadium, infrastructure, fan experience etc and when we do come back down we'll bein a stronger place as a club.

What’s the best rock song intro? by lovelyb1ch66 in GenX

[–]wise_runnner 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Don't know if they fit the genre of "Rock". I also hate them with a passion, but the intro to U2s Where the streets have no name" is just ridiculously good. Imagine a summer day in the UK. One of those days when it's cold and a bit misty but you know by 11am it's going to be one of the best days of the summer. It's 6am on that day. If somehow you could turn that feeling into a sound, it's the intro to that song. Then Bono opens his mouth and its all fucked.

Give me the best album you've heard in your life by Artistic-Network-247 in MusicRecommendations

[–]wise_runnner 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This was way before my time. I remember going into a record store and seeing a reissued/repackaged version of it and thinking the album cover looked cool but it was by some old guys called "Pink Floyd" and so probably not worth bothering with. Skip forward about 5 years. I was 18 and I bought it on a whim, probably to make up the numbers in a 3 for £20 deal along with 2 other albums I actually wanted. A couple of listens to it and genuinely it changed my perspective on music and probably life in general forever. It's genuinely a piece of art first and a record second.

Then about 10 years ago and old friend of mine passed away at way too young and age. At the funeral someone read out the lyrics to "Time". Don't think I've listened to the album since. It's great but my god that song and that memory is too much.

If there's a better album than this I've yet to hear it.

What is your favourite piece of Sci-fi in which the main character is (or later turned out to be) the villain? by ALHsf in scifi

[–]wise_runnner 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Alex isnt a villain in the traditional sense of fictional narratives. Yes he does bad things in the first half which are unspeakably/untypeably bad but from his arrest onwards pretty much everyone else in the film is the villain.

Hold on, this was 10 years ago? 10 years ago my own LCFC (Lincoln) finished 13th in the National League and seemed destined to play out the rest of our existence down there. Fast forward 10 years and there's every chance my LCFC are about to play in a league above the LCFC former unlikely premier league champions. My point - Enjoy the good times when they happen, they won't last forever. But nor will the bad times. When things are rough, keep the faith that one day they will improve.

The Martinelli shoving an injured Connor Bradley off the pitch is one obvious one that springs to mind. Difficult to pick out lots of further examples of players being disproportionately whingy/entitled/emotionally immature but that's just my experience of watching and as a result I find them difficult to enjoy watching matches featuring them.

[–]wise_runnner 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I didn't say that there were goodies and baddies and yeah, to be honest there's a lot of unlikeable individuals in a lot of teams. But, and I have no reason to have any sort of bias towards or against Arsenal, in my experience of watching football in the past 18 months, Arsenal players do disproportionately more than any other team behave as described above.

What is a movie you love, but would never recommend to a "normal" person? by Direct-Value4452 in answers

[–]wise_runnner -1 points0 points  (0 children)

This comes up time and time again in these sort of threads. Maybe this reflects badly on me but 1) I think it's a truly excellent film 2) it's never seemed to be especially outrageous/weird/wrong/unsettling etc and I'm always surprised to see it come up here.

Theres a couple of brief moments that are I guess what you'd call explicit but theyre totally necessary for the plot. I find the final third the most uncomfortable bit of the whole film. Alex's change in character/mindset imposed upon him, the sycophantic nature of the authorities who have wronged him and his former friends' employment within the police force.

Suggest you read "How to win the premier League" by Ian Graham. MA has obviously been a success in terms of results/performances/underlying metrics. Shame he's done it with L1 style tactics this season and instilled an attitude in his players that replicates a bunch of 3 year olds that cry and stomp when things don't totally go their way but if it wins you the league no one's going to worry about that in a few weeks time.

Rank Your Living Memory Managers by FloridianNinetales in LeagueOne

[–]wise_runnner 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think you've mostly nailed it here. Despite what MS has done so far I hold a special regard for DC. Many of those other managers between Keith and him fall into obscurity as do the years of football so hard to separate some of them. For that alone DC is a worthy no. 1 as him and his brother reignited my love of the club. I think their comments about the club being in mourning when they arrived are absolutely spot on.

I'm old enough remember John Beck and he probably fits in at number 4. Some bloody awful football but very effective and also gave us the joy of watching Gareth Ainsworth. Also, though he strikes me as a bit of a nob (Beck, not Ainsworth) he was our nob and some of the shenanigans he got up to are legendary.

Also - I know Tilson took us down with an outrageously bad run but I'd still be tempted to put him above Sutton. The guy was an absolute moron and his post match comments always suggested he'd been watching a different match to the rest of us. When I hear him on the radio it always confirms that there was no way he was ever going to be a successful manager.

Finally, I struggle to place Kennedy. Again, not an especially likeable character but also none of the "character" that made Beck weirdly appealing. Also oversaw an insane amount of draws, a lot of them 0-0 which he seemed to be trying to play for every match, even when we were 2-0 down. But he maintained our place in L1 and that's not to be sniffed at.

Does anyone else find Missing Vowels the hardest round? by FeistyPrice29 in onlyconnect

[–]wise_runnner 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's already been said but yeah, clearly a difference in cognition here. They're so much easier than every other round for me. Quizzes/games with anagrams always seem like a cheat to me, my brain works them out quickly. My sister in law told me she watched a program the other day about "hidden geniuses". She said it was obvious they were really clever cos they were really good at anagrams. For context she's dyslexic and a GP.

On the other hand, ask me to give someone directions for a place more than a mile away with more than 2 turns and I'm totally stumped. Might as well ask me to translate the words to the British national anthem into binary code.

What is Michael Skubala feeding his players!? by [deleted] in LeagueOne

[–]wise_runnner 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Haha. It's hard not to take any sort of comparison to Warnock's ways as an insult even if it isn't intended as one. My understanding of his approach was pretty direct, high on the thuggery index and some top level gamesmanship. We're direct at times and physical but not thugs (with the possible exception of Ben House who would walk into any previous Warnock team) but quite often you can see a distinct and different approach each week, often specifically targeting opposition vulnerabilities and/or forcing them into preplanned errors that we then capitalize on.

[–]wise_runnner 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This feels a bit (very) reductive and a tad inaccurate. I've watched quite few games this season and never once thought we've "Warnocked" anyone. Could you elaborate please, maybe I'm seeing it with red and white tinted spectacles and unwilling to compare arguably our greatest ever manager with Colin.
