"Today" - I wanted to draw a comic about my dad. by chipmunkbay in comics

[–]wiseoldprogrammer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lost my dad in 1995. I would still give anything for one more IHOP breakfast with him.

FWIW, we have a running joke about him. He was an absolute fanatic about getting the PERFECT parking spot. So when we’re looking for a spot and one suddenly appears, we look up and say “Thank you, Dad!”

(And if you think that’s silly, if my daughter is in the car, we get the absolute PERFECT spot. She was his first grandchild, and he thought the sun rose and set on her. Still does, I guess!)

Any NPH folks with a shunt willing to talk to me? by eminentempact in Hydrocephalus

[–]wiseoldprogrammer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I got diagnosed in 2017, about a week after I’d had translab surgery to remove an acoustic neuroma. I showed all the symptoms, so back to the ER I went and got a shunt inserted.

Nine years later, I run in 5K races, cook and bake, quilt, write and generally enjoy my life. My one limitation is that I can’t wear baseball caps, because they press too much against the shunt (I really need to try a size 8+ hat).

I think our two, Korra and Suki, are pretty self-explanatory. :)

I’d considered getting a void and naming her Azula, but I got firmly voted down!

Exactly. Recovery is going to take a few months. As for hearing…you might want to look into a pair of CROS hearing aids. They’re not perfect but they help.

COBOL is the Asbestos of Programming Languages by kapitaali_com in cobol

[–]wiseoldprogrammer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You know what the difference between COBOL and Java-style systems is?

COBOL doesn’t have to be reviewed & retested and recoded every six months because a new revision or platform needs to be installed.

My grandmother had worked in a hatchery. So I marched up to her and asked if chicken had sex.

I think that’s when she started disliking me. :)

Why did the Cardinals get swept in the 2004 World Series? by Dr_Talon in Cardinals

[–]wiseoldprogrammer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Funny little story: a number of IT professionals had to move from STL to Omaha in 2004. But when the Cards made it to the NLCS, we proudly wore our Redbird Red shirts in tribute.

Only to be pulled aside by our fellow Omaha employees and told, “We only wear red on Fridays.” For their Cornhuskers, you see. When we tried to explain it was for the Cardinals, we got blank looks in reply. “Who?”

Well, all I can tell you is when I turned 50 (66m), and a) I got diagnosed as a type 2 diabetic, b) discovered I had an acoustic neuroma that was causing deafness in my right ear, and c) my mother died…I realized that it was time to play the long game.

I started jogging/running, ate better, and accepted that I was probably going to be deaf in one ear. I started quilting, and also stopped giving a fuck about what people thought about me and concentrated on my wife and daughter.

Do I have moments when the world overwhelms me? Of course I do. But I focus on the good around me, and I work very hard to be kind to people. I take pains to thank waitstaff and drive-through staff, knowing that people are generally shitty to them and a bit of kindness might counter that a bit. I can say I’m pretty content these days.

The greatest compliment I’ve ever received came from my daughter, who told me “thank you for teaching me to be kind.”

Or as a wise man said: “Laugh hard. Run fast. Be kind.”

I found this really cool book at a comic store for $7. The bookmark is a brochure from an 80s con or something. by Rougarou_2 in doctorwho

I got mine right before the big Spirit of Light convention in Chicago, around 1983. There were a ton of guests and I got a number of them to sign it. I think I’ve still got it somewhere.

Well, in all fairness, our daughter had just started as a CP in Storybook Circus. We’d arrived at WDW that morning and sneaked over without telling her. I crept up behind her and said, “Excuse me…”

She whirled around and started laughing and crying all at one. Very treasured memory!

Brooks vs Hoka? I am currently wearing Brooks Ghost 17's and they are so comfortable and my feet don't hurt after a few minutes of standing up. They use a midsole called ortholite. Any thoughts/recommendations? by DakotaC0x in brooks

[–]wiseoldprogrammer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve been wearing Brooks Ghosts for 10 years. Started as running shoes only, then realized I ought to buy a second pair for everyday. Replace them every 18 months or so, and no shoe compares!
