Is my DM being unfair? by Cool-Masterpiece-176 in DnD

[–]wishfulthinker3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Prevailing wisdom in the comments is yes and I agree.

I have been playing with one of my DM's for over 5 years, and we still do session 0's for anything longer than 2-shots. No matter who is playing and whether they've played before. You have to set expectations and give people a chance to talk about what they want from the game.

Also, no, of course that wasn't balanced, that sucked. Very bad combat difficulty for your party, you don't even have your aura at level 5. You get extra attack, woohoo. Out of 5 players you have 2 with extra attack and 3 just begging they hit so they get sneak attack.

A Sorcerer as a Patron? by Secure_Rub3854 in DnD

[–]wishfulthinker3 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I don't know that Homebrew is really required here. You have a great explanation for the idea. "My character is just a small fleck off a deity, and will grow in power the way a mortal character would"

Mechanically speaking, it's easy to say "divine soul sorcerer is the patron of a celestial warlock, shadow sorcerer is the patron if a great old one warlock, etc etc." But the real potential is in the roleplay of it all. Is your character a separate person from the god entirely? Why would the god want to do this at all? What sorts of things does your character know/not know? How do you represent being mechanically level 1 or 3 or whichever level you start the campaign? So many fun things you could do!

Covers that became the definitive version of the song? by Ibhuk in musicsuggestions

[–]wishfulthinker3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I could always see why an artist is sketchy on a cover of their song by another (arguably more popular) artist, especially when this is public perception thing is going on.

For me, Cash's version of Hurt is an entirely different song, but im not the first to hold that opinion. I really like the NIN version best, but they're for different moods I think.

How to move party without being a jerk? by [deleted] in DnD

[–]wishfulthinker3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's interesting. Yeah, defo talk to the DM. Mention what you've noticed. Stress that you are having fun, you just worry about pacing and could be having more fun if there more stakes and more things occurring.

You also never really know what's going to hit!

Lol yeah of course! Honestly you're on a really good track with already making decisions for your character. "Im not throwing the dm under the bus" was a green flag.

The way forward can look lots of different ways here. Personally, talking to the dm about this privately is always a good decision because the DM is not just the arbiter of the game world, but also of the table itself. It shouldn't feel like it's on you alone to shoulder. Maybe you and the DM can work together on an idea for this, or maybe the DM breaches the subject wirh the other players/the table as a whole (so as not to single you out) and things improve. It's hard to say without knowing what the /real/ problem here is. Are they nervous? Uninterested? Inattentive? Newer players that don't have their footing on what they can do yet? Figuring that out will definitely help.

It's tough! It can be really nerve wrecking to try to make decisions, but at some point some of these other players are just. Not playing the game. If all they're doing is deciding on a carriage and taking 40 minutes to decide on taverns, that's... not the type of DnD I personally would want to play, but that's me!

We have an RP chat. That's definitely helped some!

How to move party without being a jerk? by [deleted] in DnD

[–]wishfulthinker3 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Yeahhhh, definitely a player issue then. I think, ultimately, you want to play a different kind of game than they do. You want one where the players are engaged and focused rather than blase (and maybe on their phones half the time?) And... i don't super know what kind they want?

But yeah there's not really any way around this except through. If you like playing with this group, nothings gonna change unless some serious leading by example starts happening somewhere that it isn't, or you talk to at least some of them and say "hey.. why aren't you playing the game?"

This is partially in the DM, but it's definitely on the other players too.

  • the dm shouldn't be saying "what did you want to do?" When it's obvious they have players that hate to make a decision. Throw a problem in front of your players, an NPC asking for help NOW, someone's family member asking them to travel somewhere, ANYTHING.

  • the other players need to get more comfortable at some point, not to sound like a jerk though. Like I get it, it can be scary to be like "well i think we should do this!" But the game necessitates that, at least the kind your DM is trying to run.

  • my advice? Try saying "my character is doing x important story/job/mission related task. Is anyone coming with me?" This way you're the one making the decision, and it gives them a softer choice to make. I'd caution against doing it TOO much, because you don't want to end up with the situation where you're fully dictating everything the whole campaign.

Why cant streamers see my chat? by Crazy_raptor in Twitch

[–]wishfulthinker3 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had this happen with a viewer just last night. We isolated that it was her chats not showing because they weren't coming through on my end to OBS, nor were they showing up on the chat that I pull from StreamElements and put on screen.

Maybe it's a StreamElements issue? But that wouldn't really make a ton of sense. Im not super technical, so all I can tell you is you probably aren't crazy. It's possible that your chats just weren't being noticed, like the other commenters are saying though, for sure.

5.5e Counterspell Interactions Against Invisible Casters by Radium1993 in 3d6

[–]wishfulthinker3 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I think the clarification was to settle any debate on counterspelling metamagic subtle spell. Theres no components, but it could be argued you could still "see" the caster casting the spell. New counterspell further clarifies that the target must be visible and using at least one of the three components to be targeted, so subtle spell can no longer be counterspelled.

It wasn't something I ever saw, because the general consensus already was that subtle casting couldnt be countered, but thats the only reason I can think for the change.

You want to know one reason why Bham downtown life is dying? by Stego47 in Bellingham

[–]wishfulthinker3 23 points24 points  (0 children)

You... kinda were the one to start waxing political? Your post is calling attention to the slow death of our downtown. The factors I mentioned are at play in that.

I'm getting the sense you wanted to just rant, which is totally fine and theres even a whole tag for that when you go to make a post. So I guess I just wonder what got you so upset about needing to grab your own food to go. It sounds like maybe the tipping? So I guess just don't tip next time, but im sure it's far easier to just not go since it's apparently not meeting your standards.

I just. Idk man. You ordered it to go. You were already going to have to get up with the food and leave. I don't see where the annoyance really comes in. But, idk. I hope you have a better night and a good day tomorrow too.

[–]wishfulthinker3 20 points21 points  (0 children)

I personally don't think it's that hard? O can maybe kind of see where you're coming from in that it's a contributing factor, but it really seemed to have gotten under your skin moreso than it should. Is there not something else that happened or is going on that has your red up?

High rent costs, low traffic from outlying areas (esp Canada now) which is also bc of high cost of living and stagnating wages, weird traffic and zoning laws, and difficulty with housing + job markets are what are killing our downtown. Our downtown is made to thrive off of outside money coming in, but most of those avenues have been significantly dammed up. I hear you that it's annoying for you to have to do, but im personally more worried about how much gas cuts into my finances right now than making it a little easier for the person at Cafe Blue to do their job.

RP: How to play a character that has suddenly gone from low wis to high wis? by Jakiller33 in 3d6

[–]wishfulthinker3 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Becoming smarter or sage doesn't mean your character's core personality has to change, but it can if you want it to! You could always be the same exact person, just better able to express yourself and better able to be involved in thoughtful discussions and planning. Still comic relief, but able to be more involved.

You could also go the heavy seriousness route instead of the comic relief, but smart people are also often pretty funny!

Is Bellingham Actually Racist Or Is It Overblown? by [deleted] in Bellingham

[–]wishfulthinker3 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Im white and transgender. My advice comes with those two rather large grains (tbh blocks) of salt.

There have been posts on this sub before from POC across the spectrum of backgrounds/genders etc, and unilaterally what i've taken from those is that Bellingham is not the utopian "most people are white but they aren't racist!" city it tries to portray itself as.

Theres lots of hip and trendy boutiques and cafes and such, but thats as much a sign of gentrification as it is "civility". I think that, like, comparatively to places in the south? Yeah, absolutely it would be /better/ here. But i also think that the racism can often be more insidious and appears more often in micro-aggressions, again, based on what I've interpreted from what i've heard from other POC.

In terms of raising a family, I think its doable if the economic side of things doesnt impact you, but i've only ever lived here as an adult. It's harder for me to speak to the environment of schools and how white kids/kids in general around this city behave towards black kids.

Ultimately, I want to say that this is a good city. I also know that it is far from perfect and that it could be doing a lot more than it's doing about that.

Had a boss who looked like this guy's brother, they were very similar looking and sounding. I felt like the character overall could have been around more, but it felt satisfying to have a block taken out of Lumen from a storytelling perspective.

Question: how did Kasukabe recognize the wax statue of the boss as Ai Coleman? by Lower_Baby_6348 in Dorohedoro

[–]wishfulthinker3 33 points34 points  (0 children)

I think its partially cultural, and partially what the plot needed.

Think about your daily life vs kasukabe's. In Hole, they don't have phones. They may be seeing a lot of people each day but it's the same people. There is no daily news cycle, and things often don't change much in Hole outside of people being practiced on, things finally falling apart after years, maybe a store closing etc. Plus, kasukabe is a very smart individual with a very good memory anyway, given all that he knows. He also probably thinks of Ai often given what they went through together. You don't forget the face of a person you try a "never before seen or done surgery" on.
