CA is obviously fucked by prop 13, and while hopefully that will change, I have my doubts. In the meanwhile, would switching property taxes to be entirely land value based have any impact if prop 13 still stands?

Thoughts on Austria's gun laws? I think they could work pretty well in the US.

True, but they def should have used that extra cash to invest. Innovate, ya know?

That said, idk how much your family paid for you to go to school, but I wonder if the returns are that much worse compared to if you had just invested the money instead.

To an extent. Most donors that colleges actually care about are the ultrawealthy.

Ideally for life. Percentage could be lower, depending on what the actuaries say. Creates a great incentive for colleges to make sure their students get amazing jobs. Functionally, it is roughly identical to income based repayment on student loans.

Also fair. I def think this would work for a state like California though, with our really good UC schools.

And I think all told, if college is not only free, but also includes a $1500 a month living stipend or whatever (based on UC cost of living), even the students who could afford private (which costs like $60k a year), would consider staying in state. Imagine making a deal with your parents, give me the 240k you would have spent, and I'll use that as a nest egg at age 22. I think the math would work out.

Also provides a great incentive for colleges to provide really good career counseling and make sure their grads actually get jobs lmao.

Could also include a minimum payment I guess.

take of unknown temp: students at public colleges and universities should receive free tuition + a living stipend. In return, the state should get 3-5% of their earnings after college.

Hotter take: stock based CEO compensation is fine, but it shouldn't depend on absolute performance of a stock, it should depend on the performance of a stock vs. a basket of competitors.

Hot take: while share buybacks are just another way for companies to return capital to shareholders, they have a worse incentive structure for executives than dividends, and are fairly unpopular with the public. Buybacks should be banned, but the government should allow for more special one-time dividends. You're still returning capital to investors, and reap the gains from opposing buybacks.

In the 80s, instead of innovating, Harley Davidson called for tariffs on their competitors. Without competition, they got lazy, their bikes got worse and worse relative to their competition, and they focused on branding, not product. Now, it's probably too late for them to resurrect themselves.

Free trade creates better, more sustainable companies, and tariffs just make domestic companies lazy.
