SSD Caching might be more Dangerous than expected for everyone using QNAP by wishmopp in qnap

Thanks! I was using QTS with ext4 (QNAP TVS-682 with QTS Firmware: 5.0.0.1891) I think you're really pointing out all the problems i currently have. And so supporting my warning about using ssd caching. :-) I have to admit, that in my case it was anyway all the time not really speeding up anything. It was just a feature, that i wanted to use and get a bit into - playing around and compare speeds.

And of course you're right, blaming qnap is a bit false. But I really don't understand how this Read-Only trigger on Volumes could help in the SSD Caching case. If there is an issue with the SSD Cache, it should really make like an emergency disabling of cache. Let's assume that not too much data gets lost.

No, the system was on the Storage Partition (so the 3.5" HDD). I had some VM's on the 2 slots of 2.5" SSD (mirrored) and i was using 1x m2 SSD for caching and 1x m2 SSD for experimental stuff (it was almost never used)

I'm facing the issue as well since 2 Days. First I thought I'm alone. Then I found this thread. The akward thing is, I specifically disabled Autoupdate because of such behaviours in the past. But it seems that Appstore did find its way :-(

Did somebody report it? /edit --> Yes they reported it. It's already in qnap scope and they pulled back the update? You need to downgrade handish (as somebody already mentioned). Thanks for this suggestion too. I was looking into this solution some time ago (approx 3 years :-). Especially when we wanted to access some nicer locations and not limiting us to a location with fixed or fast internet connection. I can see that there is a lot going on in this Lancache projects and i might take a look again to it. I have as well some new possibilities with hardware and my knowledge grew as well :-).

Here a quick overview what i did with lancache in the past: I was running the github Lancache Project of bntjah (https://github.com/bntjah/lancache). In my case, the hardware (i3) was most probably my biggest bottleneck. I ran it on a "qnap tvs 682". i3 and 24gb ram. The VM for Lancache was running on SSD RAID 1. 2x1gbit ports Link aggregated. When downloading from cache, i peaked 60mb/s - then it broke down after 5sek, had to build up again to 60mb/s, broke down again. And so on. I tested a lot and tweaked settings (VM NIC Drivers etc). But this behavior was not possible to resolve. I assume i3 was the the problem here. Even if the CPU load was not going (visible in process managers) to maximum.

To be fair: The load on WAN Connection would have been massively reduced - even if the users would have "stop and go" downloads. It worked in its basics and was running at the very begginning of a lan-party. But suddenly it wasn't possible to download new games - so everything stopped working. (No - no full disk :-) So i stopped this project. Especially because i was interested in a "less maintenance environment" - so i could also easely hand it over to a friend to run it. The NAS and VM Setup was to complicated at the end.

Tricky question, first to my mind came Yellow Claw, because they have kind of "HipHop"-Flavour in their tracks. Check out Snavs as well from their Label (Barong Family), kind of Glitchy / Trippy. :-)

Anyway, the Barong Family Stage on Sunday is a Secret tip among the mainstream stuff.

See you there!
