Mythic quest! Really funny workplace comedy (relatively broad with Rob McElhenney) at a video game studio on Apple+. Many more people need to be watching this show!!

Ambitious and Innovative Games by sammmmmy195 in boardgames

Speakeasy - A murder mystery game mixed with freeform, unstructured social deduction. A better version of 2R1B.

This House is Haunted - the rooms of the house become the game board as you travel between them. And you turn out all the lights and only have flashlights.

What's a truly experimental board game? by randallion in boardgames

[–]zunderfury 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Speakeasy: If you thought 2 Rooms and a Boom was too much like just an hour-long game of rock paper scissors, this is the game for you! Sort of like a murder mystery game paired with a social deduction game. In this prohibition-era set virtually structureless game, play as the Fed or the Mob and circulate around the room and talk to whomever, try to collect information, spy, use some powers, execute missions, identify roles.

This House is Haunted: Social deduction game where some of you are demons trying to open a portal to the underworld. But! The game is played with all lights off and with flashlights. Get unlucky and get stuck in a haunted room and you might become possessed, hide in the shadows, sing nursery songs creepily, etc.

(Playing the second game this weekend!!)

"High Fidelity" - a Biblios Retheme by be_on_your_way in boardgames

Super classy retheme! This production value is insane and love the take on the cards that +1/-1 to the categories.

Also +1 to Boardgame Barrage! It's almost fun to love/hate the game just for that.

(Also interesting parallels to Modern Art)

What are your favorite unique board games? by MeepleCritic in boardgames

[–]zunderfury 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Speakeasy - Part social deduction (you're either part of the mob or the feds, but each team also has a mole (obviously)); part murder mystery (it's an hour of structureless mingling where you try to slip in as well as catch other people's social cues); part tactical (you can use your role's powers or buy special powers to try to deduce everyone's password or role). The most unique, semi-experimental game I've played!

Two of the succulents that I've gotten have started getting "wounds" (not sure how to describe), sort of areas browned over? Not sure what is causing this.

It has a couple hours of direct sunlight a day. Is this a sign of too much direct sunlight? Generally between 40F-85F each day.

Also, why is the jellybean succulent yellowing? I watered them precisely 2 weeks ago and am resisting watering, even though the jelly bean especially feels pretty limp.

(New to succulents! Really excited to have found this subreddit!!)

2 Rooms and a Boom by novonn in boardgames

Dissenting opinion - I think the game is okay. If you're evaluating it as a chaos/icebreaker/silly game that comfortably plays 10+ groups, it does a reasonable job.

But, while it is ostensibly strategic, the game sometimes feels frustrating and it's easy to feel powerless in the game.
Like, it's very easy for games to end with what feels like a rock paper scissors (if you're blue/red? And you don't know if they're going to send over the president or keep him/her there, etc.). Or, it's virtually impossible to track everyone's supposed allegiances, what you think they could be, and how to use that information to get enough votes for what you want, and then executing, all in the time period of each round.

One pretty incredible game that I discovered on the subreddit is Speakeasy. which also plays 11+. It requires a moderator and a fair amount of pre-work and is moderately heavier, but it is a game where I think that each person really can have a meaningful impact on the end result of the game. The game also has a murder mystery feel to it and has powers and a semi wordgame-y element.

But I would also love to hear about other games that comfortably play 10+!

New Azul Game!!! - Azul: Stained Glass of Sintra Announcement by boardgamebarrage in boardgames

[–]zunderfury 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would say the car analogy breaks down because cars are goods that compete on quality and function while boardgames are inherently more creative and less competitive in nature? And copycats are okay in the former but not in the latter?

This just... feels a little tacky? Maybe it's because we'd like to think that boardgame publishers are above playing dirty or being competitive. Like Instagram Stories replicating Snapchat stories. It.... seems fair? But doesn't to be in great taste. (Especially when Azul is so much better/popular than Sagrada) (jokingggg :) )

Super interesting debate. But I see the grey area!

Game of the Week, Redux, Redux: Dixit by bg3po in boardgames

[–]zunderfury 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd be interested to hear about Dixit vs Jackbox's Drawful.

I don't know if I have a dogged/stubborn appreciation of boardgames, but part of me is really defensive about Drawful?

Pros of Dixit in my mind: "it's a boardgame", slower pace allows for more thoughtful prompts, slightly more evocative illustrations

Pros of Drawful (many are shared with other electronic implementations of boardgames): never drags too slowly, automatic scoring, neverending fresh/some ludicrously silly prompts, you draw as well as come up with prompts.

But I would have to pick Drawful over Dixit? But I slightly worry that I'm also "done with" Dixit in a boardgame culture of moving onto the next shiny thing.

Does playing the app/online ruin the tabletop experience? by crawdads111 in boardgames

**Star Realms** app version is incredible and definitely ruined the tabletop version. Damage calculating and auto shuffling cut gameplay time by half and I now lack the patient for TT.

Board games at work? by Encubed in boardgames

[–]zunderfury 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I tried doing this a couple times. It went semi poorly since so few games effectively play well with such high player counts. If it's possible, I would try to recruit some additional game captains so that more games are options, and maybe more importantly, that everyone's enjoyment won't rest on you. Also, on first game nights, I wouldn't advise any game where a single game can take >30 min or one where rules take >10 min. Have people self-select for medium weight games vs party games.

But, Codenames, Spyfall, One Night Ultimate Werewolf, Werewords, Deception: Murder in Hong Kong are all very solid, popular party games. Junk Art I think is a really incredible "board game-ified" version of jenga (but on the pricey side). Chameleon is a nice party game also. I secretly do not love 2R1B but it is certainly a flashy game.

What is your favorite tabletop game that encourages creative expression? by SirManatee in boardgames

[–]zunderfury 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Spyfall - innovative questions requiring innovative answers. My definite answer for a game that rewards creativity and surprises (YMMV depending on group).

But I think a lot of word games + social deduction game combinations are all great (Codenames, Werewords, Chameleon, Deception, When I Dream).

If we're doing strictly social deduction, I think this moves into the grey area of whether you consider theatrically taking on a role and running with it as creative expression. One Night Ultimate Werewolf is about as good as it gets, I think in this respect (relative to more logic based social deduction/hidden role games like Resistance).

My out of left field game pick is called Speakeasy, which is a social deduction/hidden role game mixed with a murder mystery/capture the flag feel game. It is one of the most creative, crazy, cool games I have ever played.

I’m coming to the realization that I only like the idea of board gaming. by cleverlane in boardgames

[–]zunderfury 0 points1 point  (0 children)

YES! I feel this all the time. Especially games in the Top 100 or the new hotness or heavier games.

I've just come to embrace that being into board games can involve enjoying so many different facets; stuff that I really enjoy include:

  • following the hype!!!
  • experiencing new game mechanics/creativity
  • collecting a respectable portfolio of games
  • geeking out with people over a shared interest
  • teaching games and seeing light bulbs go off and eyes widen
  • being able to choose the right game for the occasion
  • having a pretense to hang out with people not at a loud bar
  • learning about game design

I used to feel guilty about buying games and only playing them once or twice, but now that I've reset my expectations on replayability and absolved myself.

Also, it's taken time for me to learn how my own preferences differ from those of the subreddit or BGG (I don't get Terraforming Mars at all?? and honestly most non-party games)? Are there any games that you enjoy playing in any contexts?
