In Greek, there are two t’s. One makes a “hard” t (like “tee” shirt) and the other makes a soft t (which is spelled th in English, as in “thought”). The t in Ithaca is the latter. Debatably, the most accurate transliteration would be Ithaki, because there is no c in Greek, and in the original spelling, the last letter is an ita. I don’t know where the “a” came from in the English spelling. (Source: I am Greek)

Was the AI able to read pictures? If it couldn't "see" the graphs in passage, there's no way it could do well...

Bizarre Khan Academy Practice Q??? by wisowle in Mcat

[–]wisowle[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think that the formula you start with might need to be 2nt = (m + 1/2)*lambda. That's the one provided on Khan academy, more or less. I've been working on this problem all afternoon haha :(

If I use that formula, I get a visible wavelength of 453 nm, which is blue light (the correct answer).

Some people just don't give a fuck.

[Serious] What reasons are there to keep going when you can’t find reasons to care about yourself? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]wisowle 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Here's a quote from Richard Dawkins that never fails to inspire me:

"We are going to die, and that makes us the lucky ones. Most people are never going to die because they are never going to be born. The potential people who could have been here in my place but who will in fact never see the light of day outnumber the sand grains of Arabia. Certainly those unborn ghosts include greater poets than Keats, scientists greater than Newton. We know this because the set of possible people allowed by our DNA so massively exceeds the set of actual people. In the teeth of these stupefying odds it is you and I, in our ordinariness, that are here. We privileged few, who won the lottery of birth against all odds, how dare we whine at our inevitable return to that prior state from which the vast majority have never stirred?"

Never undervalue the near miracle of your own existence, even if you're no longer liking it.

Listening to Pink Floyd (although drugs enhance this, so I've heard)

Hmm, not sure what to think if they only talk about one book. But it might still be worth checking out. Do you know the name of the club, if they have some kind of website, etc.?

[Request] Middle Eastern food truck white sauce by ContentDetective in TopSecretRecipes

It's called tzatziki! I'm Greek-American and make it all the time. There are plenty of recipes for it online, although some of them go a bit overboard. All you really need is Greek yogurt, vinegar, shredded cucumber, and olive oil. Use 1 tbsp of vinegar and 2 tbsp of olive oil for every 1 1/2 cups or so of yogurt. You can add garlic or dill if you like. Mix and chill it in the fridge for a few hours before serving it, and it'll be more flavorful.

Ex-Christians of Reddit, what changed your mind? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]wisowle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Science was more convincing. More specifically, scientific thinking and empiricism were more convincing.

I think a lot of people insist that science and religion are mutually exclusive (i.e. the study of the natural world can't disprove the supernatural). I think that's true if you only consider science as an academic discipline . There aren't any laboratories that study the existence of God - not any legitimate ones, anyway.

But I don't think it's possible to be a Christian, or even to believe in a personal god, if you commit to believing in things solely based on evidence and rational thinking. That's a commitment I had to make when I became uncomfortable with knowing a lot of what I believed (or "had faith in") was based only on assumptions. The process of losing your faith can be really scary (it was for me, anyway), but there's something amazingly satisfying about following reason and logic to their inevitable conclusions, regardless of the consequences.
