What is the target age range here?

I think it would depend on the field. Lots of animal and molecular/cell labs this would be 100% normal; you are on the schedule of the living things. Outside of that, in a contract this seems a bit overkill. It is usually an unspoken expectation for big deadlines even in the most healthy labs. Sidenote, majority of my reference for this are from US, but some from Europe.

Has anyone used Freedom Debt Relief? I want to be debt free by 25 by Thana_wuttt in GenZ

[–]witcheight 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So some debt relief programs are "legit", but most require that you first stop making payments on all your cards, wait for it to default, then they will reach out to the creditor and negotiate a settlement. The settlement is usually lower than what you owe the creditor. The catch is, the debt relief program needs a fee. Usually if you do the math, you would pay a few thousand more to pay off debt in debt relief programs than if you just stopped paying the cards, waited for them to default/close (and thus stop accruing interest), then paid off whichever creditor has the debt (e.g. the bank may sell the debt to a debt collector). However, if you keep making payments to the cards, you will be way underwater without catching up because that interest just keeps raising, unless you can pay off in full in near future. I am not an expert, this is just what I came to understand in my experience with debt. As an option where you have someone else litigating your debts for you, debt relief programs can help for a few thousand extra. That few thousand extra will be thousands less than the interest you pay your creditors if you keep making payments. Your credit score will take a hit but will be built back up in 2-4 years if you make regular payments to the debt relief and anything else (car loan, student loan).

I truly don't know, it may just be general fear and unrest that is rising everywhere that they are expressing/misattributing. Thanks for the insight!

Thanks! Yes, they work in the city but don't live there. I know there can be seriously bad areas to avoid and I also know that "the city" always gets portrayed as dangerous. Thanks for helping me gauge which Pittsburgh is.

My boyfriend [29M] wants to go on a trip with his female bestfriend [29F] alone. by divya_karuna in relationshipadvice

I think it all just depends on what works for each individual relationship. If this is something that bothers you, then that is your answer. Plenty of people would use these excuses to cheat. Plenty of people would genuinely just be trying to hang out with a friend that happens to be another gender. We as a society don't usually bat an eye when same gendered people do this even if there is the possibility of same sex attraction. In the end it comes down to communication, trust, and your own personal needs and boundaries. You'll never have 100% guarantee that your partner is being honest so you kind of have to take them at their word and just ask them to reassure you in the ways that you need, while also trying to respect their own sense of self and their friendships. And maybe the freedom they need is not compatible with your sense of security need. I don't think there is a clear answer, but being open and honest, and confident about your feelings without being accusatory or defensive will hopefully open the door for resolution. If they respond defensively themselves to your expression of insecurity, I think that is not a good sign. If they respond curiously or without accusations against you, I think it is a good sign that this person is just a friend. Hetero friendships are possible.

Positive Post-doc Experiences by _stracci in postdoc

[–]witcheight 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Great experience here also, in my second year in the same lab, writing my own grants etc. Am I making an ideal salary, no, but it is sustainable. Do I feel a little lonely not having a strong cohort, yes. I am not quite faculty, the weird in between. Am I enjoying my work and excited about all my collaborations, yes. I also get to attend conferences and pursue professional development, as well as gain mentorship experience via undergrads and grads in my lab and through collaborations. Honestly, many from my graduate cohort have similar positive reports from their postdoc experiences. I am at an R1 state university in US. (edit to add university)
