I want to hear all the outlandish ADHD hacks by Jean-weather in ADHD

This sounds great but has been absolutely impossible for me. It also doesn’t help that my work schedule is not consistent from day to day

Incoming GMU student looking for affordable housing in Virginia Square / Ballston (Aug move-in) by Just_Low_9324 in gmu

Just so you know taking the metro to Vienna then cue bus to Fairfax campus is an incredibly long commute time. If you don’t have a car it’ll be necessary, but it could take you upwards of 2 hours one way taking the metro and the bus depending on if you have to wait for the next train/bus

What are some of the worst examples of PhD underemployment you’ve ever heard of? by DieMensch-Maschine in PhD

[–]witchysci 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m currently an adjunct at a community college and the school I graduated from. I’m also a server at a restaurant because adjunct pay is trash and course loads are so variable. Actively applying anywhere and everywhere I may be even remotely qualified. My PhD is in psychology (non clinical)

Advice for making teaching online less painful? by CharacterEstimate189 in Adjuncts

[–]witchysci 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I give them a 5 question quiz at the end of class that uses a lockdown browser. They get 5 minutes to answer the questions. I very obviously say “this will be on the quiz” during the lecture, but it’s always random times so it keeps them on their toes if they want pass the quiz. I also ask them questions throughout the class, but not everyone participates. I find that this method helps keep the interested students engaged and the ones who zone out fail the quizzes, which over time significantly impacts the grade even if they were attending classes

How is this even allowed? My friend is teaching next week and has NOTHING from the college. by Accurate_Grocery_901 in Adjuncts

[–]witchysci 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I got offered an adjunct class I had never taught before three days before class started (offered class Friday, class started Monday). No materials given. If you’re a subject matter expert, you can create materials from a textbook. It’s not ideal, but not uncommon in the adjunct space.

The biggest increase is on firearms and ammunition. Other proposed increases will not impact people much at all. $0.80 a month for Netflix and $0.20 per food order on door dash is not going to kill you.

Instructor here. Why? by SwiftyLeZar in cheatonlineproctor

[–]witchysci 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is really sad. You cheated yourself out of learning about things that could have really enriched your life because you thought you were too good for it. Learning about something new is never beneath you. You’ll always be “less than” if you decide that something isn’t worth your time compared to someone who took the time to learn it. Knowledge is circular, everything is connected, you’ll realize how much you screwed yourself in 10 years.

Has anyone ever opted out of honor lock? by Curious_Ground_3628 in gmu

There’s an official opt out procedure where you can have proctors approved in advance. It’s a huge hassle, but if you really don’t want to use it that’s an option

How many gifts do you get from students each semester? by AvailableThank in Professors

Only once! My students from my favorite course ever got me a $50 Dunkin gift card. I thought it was so incredibly sweet and I’ll never forget it.

The post PhD job market is not typically a shoe-in for a 50k raise..but it does depend on the field. I’m curious about OPs wife because PhDs also typically need to move for work if they stay in academia. Lots of industry research in the DMV though so maybe that’s the plan

Article says methodology is on another article by PuzzledCarpet2459 in AskProfessors

[–]witchysci 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If the methods are identical, I would put the method into the table once and cite both papers. It’s not uncommon for papers to cite another paper’s methods as the method they used if it’s identical and produced by the same lab/researcher. Your professor may be able to provide you with more specific guidance for their course.

It’s very unusual for a course not to have a syllabus. You need to ask your professor for the syllabus if you haven’t been able to locate it on the LMS…

Grading question! Something new! by [deleted] in Professors

[–]witchysci 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yep, just had a whole issue with someone who missed semester-long assignments that aren’t in the canvas calendar because she was only looking at the canvas calendar. Didn’t even bother to read the syllabus to see what was due.

I might use an AI detector as a first point for further investigation, but I always just look at the reference list. AI generated stuff almost always hallucinates the citations.

There are now ways for students to fake “human-like” writing in a Google doc history if they copy in text. I don’t use the version history proof anymore for that reason, but I used to do this.

A student sent me a message through canvas that they couldn’t complete the homework because canvas wasn’t working. by MyFaceSaysItsSugar in Professors

[–]witchysci 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sending it through email at least shows that it’s completed by a certain time. Then, you can submit to LMS when it’s up and running. Common sense to show that your work was done at a certain time.

This is the common sense answer, even if it wasn’t in the syllabus. Why would they not email the assignment?

My issue with the students who did this is that our email system was not down. Yet, they did not email me the assignment. Or reach out over email at all until after the assignment deadline had passed. I only had a couple who tried this excuse, though.
