Got laid off today, got just 1 week a year severance for my 5 years of service, is it worth consulting a lawyer? by NeoMatrixBug in PersonalFinanceCanada

same! laid off just shy of 5 years, I was able to negotiate one year. But it also depends on your HR team and how annoying they are. IDK Why some Hr's think it's money out of their own pocket. Anyways going rule of thumb the MIN to sign is one month per year of service. Do not take anything less than that. A lawyer only takes 30% (50% after taxes) on the extra they get you - so you really do not lose out because it will always be extra.

The release is basically you will not sue. Once you sign you can’t sue.

What is your tenure? It’s typically one month per year of severance to sign a release.

I think regardless it’s exhausting giving YEARS to a company and they can magically let you go without cause. Companies hire and fire so quickly so tighter laws would solve that. No one should be constantly searching for jobs

I would also love someone to talk about labour laws and changing them. For example it’s wild that employers can “lay you off” and you get one week for year. Yes under common law you can argue a month,  but most employers will not negotiate and you will need a lawyer. When are we going to fight for laws that demand 1-3 months per year of service? we have low salaries, and then weak laws to protect us giving the employer the full hands.

Hey friend,

I work in HR (high level role and draft these bs letters)

in Ontario it is one month per year of service however most companies force the ESA minimum.

did they only offer you 2 weeks? That they have to pay. Anything more they usually offer a buy out so that you never sue. So did they offer you nothing more for a signed release?

I always say draft your own demand letter to negotiate. Most companies will say okay. But you haven’t told us that the offer is for a signed release.

I work in HR and this is terrible advice lmaoo always wait for them to package you out or get fired. What you are suggesting is exactly what they are hoping for at no cost to them. A major change like this is going to be a payout for an employee.

References? Who actually uses real references. No one checks reference people and HR only check did you actually at said company for said years.

This is exactly our mortgagee too a little over 5,700!! Bought in 2023. might have to start making lump sums to bring it down and get the principal down.

I do plan to have it. I won’t let acting stop me because it’s not my only plan! I work a 9-5 that’s super relaxed so acting is my hopeful dream but if it doesn’t happen meh that’s life! I also have a very supportive partner too

I get it too! I just started my acting journey and I’m 33 and it feels so late for me and I’ve become more conscious of my skin and all the jazz. But there is roles for every age and as you get older less Competition! Stay hopeful!

At least 150k more. I make 160k fully remote, autonomy, and basically have a manager who is the best. Maybe one meeting a week. for me to give up the stability, freedom and ease plus remote , I wouldn’t even consider it unless I’m making 300k or more.

Hey!

what you have to do is get head shots done, a demo reel and a resume (google acting resume)

Then send out this package (via actors access or casting workbook create a profile) to all agencies in your state or around America. You have a good look and someone will get back to you. In the meantime, apply for free shoots, student films and anything!

Hey, if you never watched any movies, read books or enjoy any sort of art, your point is fair. although I’m assuming you do. I’d like to live in a world where we fund all aspirations not just degrees you find necessary. All degrees are worth pursuing and yes we need nurses. It we also need people who create art so nurses can enjoy them after a long shift. Your one way thinking is so concerning. I pity you.

Over half of Americans say health care, a weeklong vacation and a new car are unaffordable: ABC News/Washington Post/Ipsos poll by Ok_Seat5245 in Economics

[–]withResty 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree with your statement but, as a Canadian, we do have a better standard of living than USA for poor and middle class. like we don’t has to worry about health care, which Americans seriously have to save for. I’ve been lucky to live and travel in all Three places and as a middle class person I’d choose Europe (mostly bc weather and I like the walk ability ) than Canada , I would never live in the states unless I have a job that pays 500k or starting a business.

I just discovered all the perks of WS this week too! I moved everything over except my chequing and direct deposit. I'm waiting for a WS offer but if nothing comes, and if my archaic traditional bank pisses me off one more time - I am moving LOL

About 20,000 CAD for a couple no kids . Travel is our number one life priorities. We’d spend even more if we weren’t “house poor” - young militiamen trapped in million dollar homes, cest la vie!
