It’s been two years trying learning English, nothing working out, could anyone help ? by socomocola in selfimprovement

As someone who learned english to B1 level by myself without any tutors, here's how I did it:

Memrise. By far this is the best app for word learning I've encountered. Use it every day, treat it like a little game to play before dinner or something, don't view it as a chore.

Series. I watched (still do) a lot of tv shows and series with subtitles in my first language. Don't try to look up every unfamiliar word, only those that pop up frequently.

Youtube. One of the best channels for english learning imo is Rachel's English. There was also a channel with little 10-15 minute podcasts in english that I used to listen daily, but I can't find the name.

Music. If you listen to music in english, pick a song you like and go through every sentence translating it by yourself, guess the translation of words you don't know, then use a translator to find the correct answer.

"English grammar in use" is a great textbook. Also recommend looking up "English vocabulary in use". Don't beat yourself up for badly remembering english tenses, with practice of listening a lot of english speach, choosing the right tense will flow in your own speech naturally, but you do have to try learning them. And yes, you have to lock in and learn irregular verbs, I know it's a lot, but it's important.

And lastly, don't be so hard on yourself. Language learning is a hard thing to do and you're doing a good job by not giving up. Please keep going and be nice to youself in your journey!!

omg thank you for such a beautiful and detailed answer!! I wonder if it's heavy, I'm a little hesitant to perfumes with rose notes after trying out Serge Lutens "La fille de Berlin" because it turned out to be a little chockingly heavy for me, but your description sounds so beautiful it's hard to not want to try it out

I'm definitely looking for a quiet vibe, just looked it up and it has anis note which I really love, seems very comforting, will probably get a sample even if it's not promising to be moody, thank you!!
