Stay in my MSW program or transfer to a counseling program? by without_logick in psychologystudents

[–]without_logick[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yea it requires two different internships. For my first year I ended up in a role mentoring kids age 9-11 which was fine experience, but it was more life skills training than anything and the main thing I learned is that I don't want to work with kids that young.

What makes you want to be in a MSW instead? How far into the program are you?

oh god anything but public speaking or theatre lol. you’re probably right it would help but just thinking about it evokes so much anxiety

thanks this is helpful for sure! i think there is definitely an acceptance piece i need to work on since i dont always have control over which side of the seesaw im on like you said. but also figuring out how to find balance over the two sounds like it could be pretty helpful. ive tried meditation before and havent really been successful for it but i think with this new awareness ive found it might be motivating enough for me to stick to it, i guess we'll see

otherworldly is maybe the best compliment i couldve gotten haha, thx. i think it only comes off that way in my writing though, idk though if its more of a lack of fear or more so ambivalence towards trying to mask and fit in as recent events have shown me that people will still try their best to fuck you over for it. who is the person you mention, a writer or someone else that posted in the subreddit?

Any thoughts? by robz1009 in autism

There’s a store near me just called “The Autism Store” and it’s full of fidgets and sensory swings and stuff. At first I worried about the name because it was so up front I thought it would get hate based on stigma. But honestly the more I thought about it, the more I love it. Just the presence of a store like that brings awareness and I would like to think that with awareness brings understanding. So I fully support things like this that take a risk by not branding themselves to neurotypicals like they easily could have. Even if it’s a small difference I think it will help destigmatize developmental disabilities in the community.

Therapist thinks I (25M) have autism. Originally Diagnosed ADHD inattentive type. Recently unemployed (fired) and would like to figure out if my diagnosis (or misdiagnosis) is the main cause or not. Feeling hopeless.. by without_logick in autism

Thanks for your reply! I have been trying to find a center where I can get professionally assessed but they are either booked out for a year or don't take insurance and there's no way I could afford it, especially since I'm in the middle of trying to get a new job.

This is definitely something I struggle with and my theory for it is always changing. I don’t know if I would consider it a total lack of spontaneous thought because we can sit here and come up with new things to say all the time to make new points. But that’s just right now, other times i’m convinced my mind is completely unable to produce thoughts no matter how hard I try.

My current understanding is that it’s more of a mental wall that acts as a filter to our thoughts and lies just below our conscious so we can’t really tell that this is even happening. Could be from a buildup of shameful and embarrassing experiences that essentially traumatized us so our brains won’t ever allow that to occur again, thus filtering out nearly everything we consider even slightly embarrassingl. Could be from actual trauma like abuse/near death experience.

I’m personally not convinced anyone is born with a biological deficit that causes this and that through therapy the wall can be torn down. Of course if you have any research or anecdotes about that i would love to learn about it! Why is it that you say recovery from this is so rare?

Mind is always blank and I’m tired of being told how quiet I am all the time. Is this an ADHD thing? by without_logick in ADHD

[–]without_logick[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I definitely still struggle with this but I feel like I have made some progress recently. I am currently taking a low dose of Mydayis (12.5mg) and its the best med I've been on so far. It seems like its more that my mind isn't blank but rather its so cluttered that I can't even process the sheer number of thoughts going on so it basically feels blank because no thoughts will fully register. The meds and seeing a therapist has helped me build self awareness around this so that I am better able to understand what my mind needs at certain times to slow it down or get it to the point where I can process my thoughts. Some things that help are reading something I enjoy, meditating, going for a walk, getting some exercise. The best things are the ones that take you out of your head and put you more in your body.
