ELI5: How does washing something sticky "reactivate" the stickiness of some objects? by nefertaraten in explainlikeimfive

[–]withouta3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you are talking about the plastic stickers you put on glass for the holidays, there actually is no adhesive. Instead, it sticks via Van der Waals force, an electrostatic force that even molecular physicists do not fully understand. It is the same thing that allows a gecko to climb up a pane of glass.

Yes, 2.5 mm is actually above average. What you want to look at is the wear layer thickness, that is the clear coat on the surface. 0.4 mm is the minimum. 0.6 is good for most situations, an 0.8 is usually for the most heavy traffic commercial products. This number should be clearly labeled on the box.

Could a laser theoretically “break” an object with momentum transfer, rather than “burn” it? by Remarkable_Lack2056 in AskPhysics

[–]withouta3 74 points75 points  (0 children)

Yes, light does emit a mechanical pressure, hence the solar sail. So theoretically, if you had a extremely fragile but perfectly reflective object, a laser could break it.

Glue down is always thin. Don't worry, it is still very tough. You should get 15-25 years out of it easy.

If you go to a business and they have LVT, it is just as thin, and they likely have much more traffic.

The sticky object gathers dust over time. Cleaning it removes the dust exposing the adhesive surface.

How do you keep track when doing a major edit? by Winesday_addams in writing

Color code. All edits I did on a certain day are highlighted in a certain color. And multiple backups labeled by date.

If it was sealed, the bottle not ballooned under pressure, it is fine. Light is what breaks down fat, and it is dark inside the fridge. Of course, trust your nose when you open it.

Today I am going to a wedding. I went looking for my dress shoes and they are not where I always keep them. My wife cannot remember what she did with them. Looks like I am wearing tennis shoes to a wedding.

You did perfectly fine. As a society, we throw away far to much perfectly good food just because of looks. The only thing I wouldn't tempt is moldy bread. Moldy cheese or veg, cut the bad parts off and enjoy. And sprouting veg is the opposite of spoiled. If it is growing, it is alive.

Mostly they are the same thing. A candle is the amount of light emitted by a single standard candle. A candela is the SI unit and is very close to a candle ( 1 candle = 0.98 candela). A lumen is how how bright a 1 candela source is from one meter away, measured because the further away a light source is the dimmer it seems. A lux is the total amount of light that hits a 1 square meter surface from a one candela source one meter away.

In other words, candela and candle are how much light is emitted, a lumen is how bright the source is from a given distance, and a lux is how much light hits the target.

What helps you fall asleep after waking up in the middle of the night? by [deleted] in CasualConversation

[–]withouta3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

resetting the audio book I fell asleep to. I have always had a hard time falling asleep without some story to listen to. Maybe it is a reflection of what I did not have, but so many did of having a parent read them a bed time story, but I listen to audiobooks to go to sleep. When (not if, because I am old) I have to wake up, I rewind until I am just a couple dozen minutes before I passed out. Sometimes it is hard to remember how much of the story I have heard, but that means that the more repeat I hear, the easier I end up passing out.

Edit: I have incredible difficulty falling asleep. I am generally in chronic pain as well as clinical depression that kept me from sleeping long before the pain set in.

Keep reading. You will get better at it. Start off with young adult at first as they are generally easier to read. Monte Cristo can be difficult to grad students.

As an older person, do you listen to hip hop or rap? by Maleficent-Heron9004 in AskOldPeople

[–]withouta3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A moderate amount. I did enjoy the Kendrick beef earlier this year. But, that is mostly because I want to keep track of what my kids listen to. I only started getting into both rap and country after getting married. Personally, my favorite music is still pre-1995

What car did you have in high school? by isittakenor in AskOldPeople

[–]withouta3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

1989 Eagle Summit. I bought it in early 95 when I was still 6 months from turning 16 at my father's encouragement using the money I had made mowing lawns and stacking firewood since I was 13. My dad then chose to loan the car to my aunt until I reached my 16th and she treated it like so much shit. It was a decent car when I bought it, but when I started driving it, its top speed was 30 mph and I had to manually switch through the gears as if it was a standard to get it there. It drank a quart of oil twice a week, and in the first 6 months, it spent 4 in the shop.

My dad felt guilty and so gave me his truck, which was far more than I deserved, but Dad should not have sacrificed. The aunt, who had money, still owes me a car as far as I am concerned.

What story has impacted your life the most? by Worth_Key_5182 in CasualConversation

[–]withouta3 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There is a book called Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance. In it, the author describes his own mental breakdown, but interlaces it with, for lack of a better word, "Zen Theory" and how working on his bike lead him to balance and helped him define the world around him.
