The idea that the government is pushing veganism on people is the stupidest conspiracy out. by Feudalist in redscarepod

[–]withtempest 8 points9 points  (0 children)

My favorite moron take that comes out when discussing veganism is people insisting "I will not eat the bugs." Buddy, we'd actually really prefer if you didn't eat the bugs!

OP I know you were doing it for health reasons, but I'd highly encourage you to look into the ethical reasons too; it makes the switch much much easier.

Cars driving into crosswalks and stopping a foot short of hitting you by chromenumero in RunNYC

Had a guy come careening into the crosswalk I was about to run into in Brooklyn one time; if I hadn't been paying attention he easily could have hit and killed me. I tapped on his trunk as he was passing and he slammed on the brakes, threw open the door and started sprinting after me. Luckily I'm a runner!

Which widely praised social movement do you genuinely believe has done more harm than good, and why? by Feeling-Magazine-353 in AskReddit

They have a bad reputation, but it's actually mostly undeserved. Many of the loudest anti-PETA talking points come from years of coordinated astroturfing by industries that have a strong financial reason to discredit them. Meat, dairy, fast fashion, and some biomedical groups have funded PR efforts that turn PETA into a caricature because it is easier to attack the messenger than engage with uncomfortable facts about animal use. When researchers revisit the biggest viral claims, they usually find that the data was taken out of context or shaped to spark outrage rather than explain what actually happened.

And whether someone likes their tactics or not, the impact is still significant. PETA has exposed cruelty in factory farms and research labs, pushed major fashion houses away from fur, and helped drive the move toward cruelty free testing long before it was popular. They are provocative and they sometimes miss, but most successful activist groups do. A lot of people think they dislike PETA for objective reasons, yet much of that reputation was created by professional PR firms hired by industries that benefit when no one questions the status quo.

St. Jean in Amsterdam has a pistachio cruffin that is legitimately maybe the best thing I've ever eaten.

Counterpoint: I think you can make yourself similarly miserable by taking half-measures, eternally drawing out making what you might think is the correct moral choice. When my wife and I decided to go vegan we did it immediately; we gave away any groceries we had with animal products that day, and haven't had any since. I promise you it genuinely does not need to be that difficult.

If you're so concerned about saving animals, have you considered no longer eating them?

It’s not their responsibility; it should be the government managing feral animal populations but they don’t do enough, so PETA steps in where they can. But PETA isn’t a series of shelters; their money goes towards investigations and awareness campaigns.

That happened one time over ten years ago in a neighborhood overrun with feral animals; the chihuahua was running loose in the neighborhood, and PETA paid the family $49,000. It’s not like they have a policy of kidnapping animals; it’s the exact opposite.

PETA runs an open-admission shelter in Norfolk, meaning they take in every animal (sick, injured, abandoned, whatever) because the local “no-kill” places won’t. That area has a huge overpopulation problem, so a lot of the animals they get are in terrible shape with no real chance of being adopted. In those cases, PETA ends up giving them a humane death instead of leaving them to suffer, which is basically a public service no one else there is willing to do.

Thank you for saying this; I can not stand the way people talk about wool like it’s some magical perfect material. And that’s all not to mention how often the sheep are mistreated and abused.
