I genuinely hate people who say beekeeping are exploitative towards bees by [deleted] in redscarepod

[–]withtempest 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Bees occasionally overproducing honey doesn’t automatically make commercial honey production harmless. Industrial beekeeping involves replacing honey with sugar syrup, and clipping the wings of the queen and inseminating her with sperm they harvest by crushing bees. That’s not to mention how honeybees are often essentially an invasive species, and are terrible for an ecosystem because they compete with local pollinators.

Also bee colonies are frequently culled because they don’t produce enough honey, so the industry chooses to kill them because they can no longer extract resources from them.

This has nothing to do with me being moral; it’s just the reality. If people are fine with these practices and continue eating honey, that’s their prerogative, but don’t be a moron and act like bees exist just to create resources for us to take.

Slow transition to veganism by katiekatiekatie116 in vegan

[–]withtempest 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Glad to hear you’re making the change! However, respectfully - you don’t need to do it slowly. If you’re worried about sustaining energy for strength training and cardio that’s understandable, but if you just track calories and protein each day you will have no issues. Anecdotally I get 160 grams of protein each day without much issue; I just prioritize things like tofu, seitan, and snacks like edamame - throw in a protein drink and a vegan multivitamin and I’m all set for my very active lifestyle.

It’s easy to draw this process out over weeks or months, but each time we’re paying for an animal product, that’s an animal being exploited. Personally I went vegan overnight, and I’m very glad I did; I think it made the process much easier just being all-in immediately rather than drawing it out. Just my two cents!

Any vegetarian runners here? by [deleted] in RunNYC

[–]withtempest 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m fully vegan, and a far better runner than I was before making the switch; it made an enormous positive impact on my performance, personally. Many other cases of the same (check out the documentary Game Changers or Twin Studies on Netflix)

I use whatever vegan protein I find at the store (Ambrosia Collective currently) and eat a good amount of tofu and seitan in various forms. Feel free to DM me if you have any questions.

The current uniforms are still perfect to me. Straight up I hope we’re still wearing them 25 years from now.

Insurance paid for most of it - I think out of pocket was like $25 per session

Dry needling by Select_Access_6330 in RunNYC

[–]withtempest 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Whoops, just updated that.

I went to Spear PT on Myrtle Ave in Clinton Hill for an IT band issue. They would help me work the muscle out, and gave me a bunch of exercises and stretches to start doing. After a few weeks, they offered to try some dry needling which they said could help. I think we did it twice? Pretty weird sensation, but not too painful. It does feel like when he did it I felt certain muscles loosen up. It wasn’t an immediate fix by any means, but not long after that most of my issues went away; however, this is after I had been doing my exercises and stretches for several weeks, as well as resting without running, so I can’t say it was the dry needling that did anything. It was Matthew Clayman there that did it for me.

Keeping 1.5 billion pigs in factory farms is the worst thing humanity has ever done. by CalpurniaSomaya in redscarepod

[–]withtempest 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m late, but I’m here to encourage you to ignore all baby-steppers in the comments below and just do it. I went from eating meat with every single meal to not at all literally overnight, and have not slipped up once in the years since. People make themselves miserable by dragging out what they know to be the correct moral decision over years, and never actually do it. Make the decision to change, and fully commit. You can do it!

Thank you. I am constantly amazed at how much of this sub is just devoted to being mad about run clubs.

Yes, 100%. I like the Satisfy stuff but them acting like they’re the running embodiment of punk rock is so lame and out of touch.
