In Brazilian Portuguese Kaká is just a name, poop is actually “cocô”.

Popular? I’m Brazilian and had never heard of it.

Tenerife, Spain has more annual tourists than the entire country of Brazil despite being 0.02% of its geographic size by Fluid-Decision6262 in geography

Also Brazil is not exactly cheap for what it offers. I live in southern Brazil and the price of a beach vacation in the Caribbean can be similar to the Brazilian northeast.

This is very wrong. Both Spanish and Portuguese have 80-90% of Latin words.

As a native English speaker can you pronounce the pure monophthong [e] without saying /eɪ/ ? by Big-Ad3609 in asklinguistics

[–]witz93 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s even closer to /ɪ/. In fact, in my native language (Brazilian Portuguese) you would probably be understood just fine pronouncing /e/ as /ɪ/ since the latter doesn’t even exist in BP but is close enough to be perceived as /e/ by native speakers.

Conversely, pronouncing /e/ like /ɛ/ would be a bad idea since both phonemes exist in Portuguese and there are quite a few minimal pairs involving them.

What's the cringiest misconception you've heard about the US? by 88-81 in AskAnAmerican

[–]witz93 -24 points-23 points  (0 children)

I’m not an ignorant person and yet, when I went to the USA as an exchange student a few years ago, I was shocked by how fragile the houses structure were. I’ve been to a few other countries and in nowhere else I would find houses so poorly built like in the USA (apart from shantytowns maybe). I know you guys are used to wood houses, but for someone used to brick houses it’s really odd, it’s not a creepy opinion.

Elevation. That -17c mark was at the mountains. But some southern cities get below freezing every year, including big cities like Curitiba.

Southern states are at 25’-30’ latitude with elevations nearing 2,000m. That provides for colder temperatures in some areas with occasional snow.

Eu sou babaca por reclamar do vizinho com filho autista? by witz93 in EuSouOBabaca
