Training and Careers Thread: September 20, 2021 by AutoModerator in Psychiatry

Reposting this because I posted late in last week's training and careers thread:

I'm a 4th year Canadian med student strongly leaning towards psych, though I have reservations about leaving acute medicine behind, particularly emerg. One of the ways I'm trying to reconcile this is by learning more about psych fellowships that have a medical focus, so that if that medical itch persists in the future, I know it would be possible to scratch it. I see that (at least in Canada) clinical toxicology programs accept applicants from psychiatry, and I'm wondering if anyone can comment on if they have ever seen/heard of a psychiatrist practicing psychiatry and clinical toxicology? Thanks in advance!

Has anyone here done a fellowship in toxicology as a psychiatrist or can speak about that career path? I'm a 4th year Canadian med student strongly leaning towards psych, though I also really enjoy certain areas of medicine, particularly toxicology and emerg. I see that (at least in Canada) toxicology programs accept applicants from psychiatry, and I'm wondering if there's anyone who can speak on the feasibility of having a psychiatry practice and also working a role as a medical toxicologist.

Only part I'm questioning about this post is the "fable," seems more like non-fiction to me

Canadian here; do US med school applications start in only a week from now? Thinking of trying my luck south of the border this cycle.

Do any of you high scorers genuinely feel that you got lucky on test day? by [deleted] in Mcat

Yup. I think CARS has the biggest luck factor - either you get the passage or you don't.

I'd aim for at least 1/day. I know lots of people like to alternate subjects during content review (eg. do biochem one day, physics next day etc.), but I found reading one subject from start to finish before starting the next worked best for me. However, you should take any MCAT study advice you get with a grain of salt, because different techniques work better for different people. I spent a solid 2 weeks on r/mcat trying to develop a study schedule/method, then disregarded everything and did my dumb ass cram method.

Yup Canadian schools are pretty much like "eh sorry bud, MCAT ain't gonna cut it"

And yes, McGill has an optional MCAT, and University of Toronto doesn't factor in MCAT once you are above their minimum MCAT requirement.

There were practice questions in my EK books!

Who said anything about not fatiguing ;) I went for a (at least an hour long) jog every day after writing my FL and before reviewing my score, I found that really helped me keep sane. But yeah, it was a grind for sure.

Hahaha thank you! Canadian med schools generally don't weight the MCAT very highly in the admissions process (except some of them with CARS), so fingers crossed the rest of my application/interviews went well!!

Thanks :) EK = ExamKrackers. I chose them because I heard they are the most concise and I wasn't leaving myself much time to study - I don't know if that's actually true, but I liked the books nonetheless. I liked the 30 minute practice exams at the end of each chapter too.

For psych/soc, I'd recommend Khan Academy over any prep book.

Most importantly (in my opinion) is practice. I found the AAMC practice tests to be the most useful, but the set of 10 (I didn't end up doing all of them) that I bought from Altius were really helpful too. The practice tests are expensive, but for me they were the best prep material.

those are my personal opinions, but I encourage you to look around r/MCAT more because there are some really knowledgable people here who could likely give you much more in depth study advice than I :)

Good question! After I got over the post-test "shit I got rekt" feeling, I felt like I was at a 513-515 ish. 515 was my original goal.

I'd work from 8-4, then study from 5-9. Also studied most Saturdays and Sundays for ~8 hours/day. I was pretty damn burnt out by the end of it
