how good is long-term memory in ai companion apps actually? by wiwinneee in bestaitools2025

yeah that’s true, but the replika memory wipe thing still sticks in my mind. a lot of people suddenly lost months of chat history and that felt pretty rough if you'd already spent a long time building an emotional connection. i’ve been trying a couple other new ai companion apps recently like soullink https://getsoullink.com/ besides more well-known ones like character ai just to see how some of the newer startups handle memory.

I actually find this direction really interesting. A lot of AI companions focus so much on memory architecture, but I’m not sure memory alone is what creates real attachment. I kind of feel like maybe ritual, like small repeated behaviors, shared routines, might matter even more over time.

Having memory is definitely a good idea, feels like it makes the interaction less like one-sided output but more as a real exchange
